Description

Shield of Sparrows is a slow-burn, high-stakes romantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros—where enemies become lovers, monsters stalk a cursed realm, and a forgotten princess finds the strength to tear off her crown and become the warrior she was never meant to be.

The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.

I've spent my life kneeling—to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.

I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood.

But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father's throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.

Now I'm crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him—bound to a future I didn't choose and a husband I barely know.

Everyone wants me to be something I'm not—a queen, a spy, a sacrifice.

But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there's power in being underestimated?

And what if—for the first time—I reached for it?

Adapted from the novel and produced with a full cast of actors, immersive sound effects and cinematic music!

Shield of Sparrows (Book 1, Dramatized Adaptation) grabbed me fast and never let go. The full-cast audio makes the story feel alive, like you’re inside the world rather than just listening to it. I loved how the stakes kept rising without losing the emotional core of the characters. The sound design and performances add real weight to both the quiet moments and the chaos. I finished it already counting down until the next installment.

Audiobook Review: A Shield of Sparrows by Deveney Perry (Dramatized Edition)

A Shield of Sparrows understands its genre limits and is smart enough to let the dramatized audiobook do some of the work. Hearing the story performed clarifies political exposition that would likely feel heavier on the page, and the shifting loyalties at the center of the plot land with more intention. This is not a gimmicky full-cast add-on. The format actively improves pacing and comprehension.

At its core, the story follows a princess sent into a political marriage meant to preserve peace, with the unspoken expectation that she will betray her new kingdom if necessary. What begins as diplomatic theater quickly reveals a system built on deception. The “prince” is not the prince, the kingdom’s survival depends on a hidden sacrifice, and a spreading monster corruption traces back to human error rather than mythic evil. These familiar fantasy mechanics are less about surprise than inevitability, watching each lie collapse under its own weight. In audio, the emotional triangle between Odessa, the guarded warrior, and the child at the story’s center gains texture and restraint, preventing the narrative from feeling as mechanical or melodramatic as it might on the page.

For anyone choosing a format, the dramatized edition is the stronger option. It sharpens stakes, smooths over narrative shortcuts, and makes the major reveals feel more deliberate than inevitable. If the book asks for trust, the audio earns it by quietly fixing what might otherwise be weaknesses.

I absolutely love Shield of Sparrows and was so excited to listen to the graphic audio of this book. There is something so special about a full cast of characters that brings the book to life, more so than a standard audio version of the book. This was a masterpiece in the creation and telling of the story and I absolutely cannot wait until the second half is released!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, Graphic Audio LLC, for an advance copy of this graphic novel in exchange for my honest review.
