Description
"This is the kind of book readers love to devour: family secrets, people trying to escape their predetermined roles, and a good dash of the supernatural all blended together in a story that's ultimately about love and loyalty." — Charlaine Harris, #1 New York Times bestseller
From the USA Today bestselling author of This Girl's a Killer, comes a southern gothic thriller with the bite of Sharp Objects and a dash of Practical Magic, following two estranged sisters who will do anything to protect each other – even murder. Again.
Milly can't divine the future anymore, and maybe that's a good thing. Lately, her life has been bleak enough, she doesn't need the now-silent tea leaves to tell her. Meanwhile, her estranged younger sister thrives miles away in a shiny new life with a shiny new marriage. Milly doesn't blame Francis for wanting nothing to do with her. Not after what happened in that Tennessee meadow a decade before.
But when Francis shows up on Milly's doorstep with a black eye and a plea for help – Milly can't say no. Especially when the tea leaves are finally crystal clear: if the sisters don't kill Francis's husband, he'll kill her.
And if they're going to plot a murder, the sisters have no choice but to return to the one place they'd left behind. A place where another body – and a multitude of secrets – were buried. Because this isn't the first time the sisters have needed to dispose of a bad man. In fact, they might be pretty good at it.

Southern gothic charm and sharp characterization — a strong follow-up that leaves you wanting more.
Emma C. Wells continues to demonstrate a real gift for Southern gothic atmosphere, and readers who loved This Girl's a Killer will find plenty to enjoy here. The older female characters in particular feel wonderfully, unmistakably real — the kind that can only be written by someone who has genuinely known a mawmaw or two. The humor is well-placed, the voice is distinct, and there are lines that land with quiet, devastating precision.
Some plot developments may feel familiar to seasoned mystery readers, and there is at least one element — unspoilable, but significant — that may not land for every reader. But these are minor reservations in an otherwise entertaining and atmospheric read.
Wells is a talent worth following. Here's hoping a series is on the horizon.
We Already Dug the Grave is the kind of novel that lingers in your mind long after the final page is turned. Emma C. Wells crafts a haunting and emotionally resonant story that explores grief, memory, and the complicated ways people try to survive the past. It’s a quiet storm of a book, full of atmosphere and deeply human moments.
Wells writes with remarkable sensitivity. Her prose feels both intimate and deliberate, drawing readers into the emotional interior of her characters while slowly revealing the layers of the story. The novel moves with a steady, thoughtful pace that allows its themes to breathe, creating a powerful sense of tension and reflection.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its characters. They feel real, flawed, and profoundly human. Wells doesn’t shy away from the messiness of emotion, and the result is a narrative that feels authentic and deeply affecting. As the story unfolds, each revelation adds weight and meaning, making the reading experience both gripping and contemplative.
There is also a striking atmosphere throughout the novel. The setting feels almost like a character itself, carrying the emotional gravity of the story and enhancing its sense of mystery and inevitability. Wells balances this darkness with moments of tenderness and insight, reminding readers that even in the shadow of loss, connection and understanding can still emerge.
Ultimately, We Already Dug the Grave is a beautifully written and emotionally powerful novel. Emma C. Wells demonstrates an impressive command of tone, character, and theme, delivering a story that is as thought-provoking as it is moving. Readers who appreciate literary fiction that grapples with grief, memory, and the complexity of human relationships will find this book deeply rewarding. 📖✨

I was honestly and pleasantly surprised the ending wasn't what I was expecting it to be. More eagle-eyed readers might be able to plan it out, but it was a really intriguing ride that I couldn't put down. I enjoyed the dynamics between the characters and the twists as they happened stemming from unreliable narrators.
