Description
The Unwritten Heir is a New Adult romantasy blending sharp banter, political intrigue, found family, and a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance built on tension and restraint.
Riven Augustine has always believed in fate—she just never thought it would drag her into a forbidden realm.
Captured by a fae court where silence is law and even memory can be erased, she's thrust into a deadly political game. The enigmatic king claims she's part of an ancient prophecy. His council wants her dead. And whatever is forming between them could get them both killed.
He needs her to break the curse tearing his world apart.
She needs him to send her home.
But the prophecy binding them together demands a sacrifice—and fate has never been kind to those who try to rewrite it.
A slow-burn, forced-proximity, enemies-to-lovers romantasy perfect for readers who love powerful heroines, layered magic systems, and immersive fantasy worlds with devastating emotional payoff.
A next-generation romantasy set in the world of Fated, expanding the legacy for longtime fans while welcoming new readers into a world of layered magic and dangerous prophecy.
A Note From the Publisher
This is the first book in the Fated Legacies series, set within the world of my completed seven-book Fated series. While longtime readers may recognize certain names and lore threads, this story was written to stand fully on its own.
The Unwritten Heir is a slow-burn romantic fantasy driven by emotional tension, political stakes, and layered worldbuilding. The romance develops gradually, with intimacy increasing later in the story. Readers who enjoy character-focused plots, found family dynamics, and payoff that builds over time will find this especially rewarding.
Content includes fantasy violence, themes of grief, political manipulation, and explicit on-page sexual content that is emotionally driven and integral to character development.
Honest reviews are sincerely appreciated, particularly on retail platforms upon release. Thank you for taking the time to read and share your thoughts.
With gratitude,
Cosette Verga

I absolutely loved this book. It has that same emotional depth and immersive feel that made me fall in love with the original Fated series, but the story is completely its own.
Riven is not a repeat of Areya, and I really appreciated that. She has her own fire, her own struggles, and her own growth. Watching her journey unfold felt fresh and authentic. The same goes for Toran—he is not another Ash. He brings a completely different energy to the story, and the tension between him and Riven is incredible.
The slow burn was done so well. The buildup, the restraint, the emotional pull—it kept me hooked the entire time. I loved the tension and how it simmered throughout the book.
It was also really special to see cameos from the original Fated cast at the beginning. It felt like coming home while still stepping into something new.
I cannot wait for book two. That ending has me counting the days.

I decided to start The Unwritten Heir without having read the Fated series first, and I was honestly blown away. You absolutely do not need to read the original series to understand what’s happening—the story stands completely on its own—but now I’m so invested that I’ll definitely be starting Fated next!
The slow burn romance was top tier and so incredibly rewarding. The tension builds in the best way, and when it finally pays off, it’s worth every second. I completely fell in love with Riven and her journey. Watching her navigate this dangerous, magical world felt immersive and emotional from start to finish.
The worldbuilding was fantastic—detailed without being overwhelming—and I never once felt lost. And that cliffhanger?! I am dying for the next book.
If you love slow-burn romantasy with rich worldbuilding and characters you can’t stop thinking about, this one is for you.

This book is my first 6 ⭐️ read since ACOTAR!
I have a theory. I am a part of the reading community that got back into reading recently after not picking up a book since college. Careers, marriages, babies, life gets busy, but eventually we found ourselves reading fantasy again and reliving our 90’s Disney obsessed era. You hear about some popular series like ACOTAR, Fourth Wing, Throne of Glass and give one of them a try. In my case, this was ACOTAR. This first series starts the obsession and we’re chasing that feeling again, the first book that could transport us out of reality like Disney movies used to. And I believe that we are buying all these books and reading whatever we can get our hands on JUST to feel that initial feeling again.
And this book did that for me!
I cannot stress this enough, this is an S Tier book. I have loved and am still in the process of reading all the original Fated series, but because I was chosen to read the ARC of this book, I had to dive in immediately. I am a slow reader and I consumed this in 24 hours. I could not stop. I cannot stop thinking about it, about Him. Toran. Oh my word Toran. He has leveled with Cassian, Xaden, and Ryder. I love that his stillness calms her storm. Because I am a storm and my husband is my stillness.
I feel Riven, I feel her deep. I love that she is UNAPOLOGETICALLY her at all times. I love that Areya and Ash made such a spitfire. You don’t need to read the Fated series to jump into this book, but it adds so much underlying humor and beauty because you know where her parents came from and what they fought against to get to where they are now. Although, It does give away a few spoilers if you haven’t finished or started the Fated Series.
I am obsessed with this story and the origin of it all. This world Cosette Verga has made it original and interesting and amazing. I really can’t say enough about this.
I am floored, staring at a wall, knowing that I will not know what happens to everyone until Spring of 2026. I am unwell in the best way.
I am a part of the Fated Review Team and was sent this book as a reviewer for the ARC and I am giving my review based on my own opinion and of my own free will. Obsessed, knowing now that my TBR that is not Cosette Verga is useless and I need to know what happens to my Man!! Ahhhh
Go now and read… you will not be sorry

I am absolutely obsessed with this book. I loved the Fated series so much, but The Unwritten Heir is on a whole other level. This is the kind of epic story that fandoms get obsessed with: think Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings. It has that same magic.
Like Fated, the emotional scenes absolutely wrecked me. The tension between Toran and Riven was top tier. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I absolutely cannot wait until the next installment.
And Toran? He's my favorite book boyfriend. He's so unique and refreshing, not just another copy of the shadow daddy trope. This book delivers everything I loved about Fated while expanding into something even more incredible.
Katie W, Reviewer
I’ve read all seven books in the Fated series and absolutely fell in love with them, so when I started The Unwritten Heir, I was already hooked on Cosette Verga’s world. Seeing some of my favorite characters pop up again and hearing familiar bits of lore was such a sweet surprise.
The worldbuilding in this one is next-level. I thought Fated was complex, but this takes it to another height, and somehow it’s never overwhelming or confusing.
I fell hard for Riven right away. She’s so funny, smart, and witty, her voice leaps off the page. And Toran… oh my god, Toran has my whole heart. He’s officially my favorite MMC in the entire Fated world so far. The way their story unfolds, the tension, the slow build—it’s everything I love about romantasy.
I read the whole book in one day. I literally couldn’t put it down. If you loved Fated, tyou will love this one too.. And if you haven’t read the series yet, this one stands strong on its own, but good luck not immediately jumping back to the originals after.
Reviewer 2003664
I didn’t just read this book. I feel like I consumed it. It was so good I could barely stand to put it down — and now that it’s over, I just want more.
Riven is such a relatable character. Her raw emotion struck me in a way that felt almost personal. She isn’t polished or perfect; she’s messy, resilient, guarded, and fiercely human. Every choice she made felt earned. Every moment of vulnerability hit hard.
What I loved most was how immersive the writing felt. The world didn’t just exist around the characters — it breathed. The tension was steady, the stakes felt real, and the emotional moments lingered long after I closed the book.
This story doesn’t just entertain you. It sits with you. It challenges you. And somehow, it leaves you both satisfied and desperate for the next chapter.

I have posted a review on my Instagram and my closed book group I am a part of on Facebook called Hooked On the Smut.
I absolutely loved this book, best read since ACOTAR and a 6 star read in my opinion.
Delicious tension, new realms, Fae, mates and a hot MMC make for a slow burn with a fabulous payoff. A fierce FMC and witty banter between enemies to lovers makes this a fast-paced and spicy story with political intrigue, magic and destiny.
Jennifer G, Reviewer
This book is not out yet so I’m writing a quick high level review without potential spoilers.
The FMC is Riven. She’s fierce and fiery. Her journey kept me flipping pages to keep up and watching her growth was heartwarming. I’ve read several of the Fated books and am grateful that this FMC is not the same as Areya in that series but the way her story unfolds and has me rooting for her is a testament to the authors writing!
Toran is the MMC, he’s Fae, swoonworthy, has a strong protective streak, keeps Riven on her toes with banter, and their tension makes the spice slow-cook and it’s so rich!!
Excited for book two!
I was given a copy of this book as an ARC reader but was not paid for my review! :)
That said... I got this book last night and I am already 75% of the way through. Now, some of that is because I'm a fast reader and I got really excited to read my first ARC book that I was approved for. The rest is because I was sucked into the book from Chapter 3 onward (you expected me to say chapter one, huh?). I ran to this review so that I could get my thoughts down before the last quarter of the book... but I'll be back when I'm done to update, too!
The magic system in this book is amazing, and not only is it well explained it is super unique! In the first chapters you are hit with an unexpected shock as well, throwing you into a realm of court intrique, manipulations, slow burn romance, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, Tall-Dark-Handsome MMC, multiple perspectives and last but not least... competition for love.
If you liked The Selection by Kiera Cass, Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, The Jewel by Amy Ewing, The Glittering Court by Ritchelle Mead, The Princess Trials by Cordelia K. Castel, The Vampire Royals series by Leigh Walker, Shatter Me by Teherah Mafi or the Matched Series by Ally Condie you will love this series!
I'm only upset that I got in on the ground floor here and now, when I finish the book, I'm going to have to wait for the next ones!
Candace C, Reviewer
9/10 A fast, exciting, unique story with magic, fae, and adventure and a captivating world to jump into!
I started this without even knowing there was another Fated series and that this was a spinoff and I wouldn't have known from the story at all - it did not feel like there were gaps in my knowledge and the world building is so complete on its own.
I immediately was hooked on the story - I loved that we got to experience the "backstory" with the characters instead of just read about them after they had happened and I am a big fan of the characters and their relationships with one another. The characters feel authentic and believable and the slow build felt realistic and natural. The plot and the magic were intriguing and simple to follow.
I'm looking forward to book 2!

The Unwritten Heir
Cosette Verga
Set in the world of the Fated Series
This story is about fate dragging a fiercely independent heroine into a forbidden fae realm where silence is law, memory is fragile, and prophecy demands sacrifice. Riven is captured by a court divided between those who need her and those who want her dead, while a curse threatens to unravel everything. What makes this book special is how immersive and emotionally devastating it is. The magic system feels layered and original, the political tension is razor sharp, and the romance is built on restraint, stillness, and aching slow burn intensity.
My favorite part was Toran. The calm to her storm. The quiet power. The tension in what is not said. Their dynamic is elite level romantasy and the emotional payoff wrecked me in the best way.

This book had me hooked. I couldn't put it down, and gave up on sleep to finish it. This was truly a good slow burn, with great world building and character development. The ending had my mouth dropping open, and I cannot wait to find out what happens next.

Absolutely amazing. Loved the character building and the ending was heart wrenching! Can not wait for the next one. Really enjoyed this one.

Overall, this book was REALLY good.
The world is quite easy to follow. The writing isn't too complex, it's low-key addicting and easy going. And the characters AREN'T annoying. Some moments, it did feel a little YA-y. But it's not too strong or overpowering.
I think, overall, this book is a solid 4.99⭐ read!

I absolutely love the concept for this book! I'm obsessed with the writing and hope to read everything this author publishes in the future!!

I… loved this. The yearning, the spice, the ENDING? Chefs kiss. I absolutely enjoyed diving into the magic system between the different “realms”, and fully plan on reading the other books from the Fated universe. I can’t wait to see what happens to Riven and Toran’s love and (fingers crossed) triumph over their adversaries…
Reviewer 1788640
Forbidden portal, a shadow-daddy king and one ruthless cliffhanger. I was a goner.
Riven jumps through a forbidden portal into another realm, her cousin right behind her, loyally trying to have her back as always. From that moment on, the story barely lets you breathe. I was hooked, line and sinker. Every spare minute went into reading just one more chapter.
It’s almost adorable how long Riven doesn’t realize who Toran truly is. And Toran… dark hair, silver eyes, calm intensity. The epitome of shadow-daddy energy. He smells like clean linen with something darker beneath it, cool and mineral, like night air after rain. Yes, I noticed. Of course I noticed.
Riven is thrust into a role she never wanted, she falls fast but he falls first, emotionally and situationally. A touch fast, perhaps, but the tension carries it.
This is the start of a new series set in the same shared universe as the Fated books. I hadn’t read that series before, so I went in without prior knowledge and it worked perfectly well on its own. You can sense the larger world behind it, but it never feels inaccessible. If anything, this installment pushed the original series much higher up on my TBR. A bit more world-building would have been welcome, not strictly necessary for the plot, but it would have added depth.
Stylistically, the many short sentences and frequent “I” openings distracted me slightly. It may well have been intentional to mirror Riven’s anxiety and insecurities, but it was noticeable.
And that cliffhanger.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4.5 stars, rounding up to 5
It kept me up and fully invested, and that’s my gold standard.
If you like:
• forbidden portals and other realms
• intense, calm, morally commanding MMCs with a very specific scent profile
• fast pacing and a brutal cliffhanger
Not for you if:
• you need extensive world-building from page one
• you cannot stand shadow-daddys anymore
Toran? Absolutely.
5 stars!!! What can I say......
So in Cosette fashion, she of course left this off with a WTH moment.... I should have expected but was I prepared for the way it went down..... NOPE!!! Now I sit here and am crashing because I'm gutted.... In such a good way though. I am now sitting here thinking about the book and everything I might have missed with something... ANYTHING! Oh the betrayal.... So hurtful in a way.
Ok so let me say this, if you haven't read Fated (or the series) you will be just fine reading this book. Reading Fated will help you understand Riven's parents and what happened along the way to her becoming a reality.
So now that I got that out of the way, we have our MFC Riven, our MMC Toran, and some sidekicks. So Riven's cousin Caelan is in this as well.... He is along for the ride I guess will say it the best way. So this book hits hard right off the bat with a death that our MFC doesn't handle well. One day her cousin and her ended up on the Fae side of the veil. They meet a guy (stranger danger) who then takes them captive. Riven is held captive in a "jail" while cousin is in luxury. You will find out why when you read this. Needless to say, in order for the "stranger" to keep our MFC safe, she is entered into the "courting" ceremony and has to compete against others to be the kings new wife. So then there is all that hot mess. You learn who the king is and that Riven has a lot of the best qualities from her parents. She never gives up and has a heart of gold. She learns some secrets (and it's a big secret). As she works to uncover some things, she and a certain someone start to get close. I don't want to spoil much more but let's say, in Fated fashion, some things are very predictable but still so great to read.....
BUT THAT ENDING!!!!!!! Ok, yes I'm still crashing from this book. My heart is hurting for these characters. I know they will be just fine in the end.... BUT I was not expecting the level of what happened to happen.
Thank you to Cosette for allowing me an early copy of this to read and approving my NetGalley account.
Now to sit and wait on book 2............ UGH!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – I am NOT okay… and I mean that in the best way.
I went into this expecting to enjoy it. I did not expect to become emotionally feral over it.
First of all, the FMC? She feels like a real person. Not a “strong female character” in the hollow, performative way. She’s messy. She second-guesses herself. She makes choices that feel human and layered and sometimes a little reckless—but always understandable. Her strength isn’t loud or invincible. It’s stubborn. It’s bruised. It’s earned. I saw myself in her more than I was prepared to, and that made every betrayal, every revelation, every tender moment hit ten times harder.
And then there’s the MMC.
I need a minute.
He is devastatingly hot, yes—but not in a copy-paste shadow-daddy way. He feels original. The way he moves through the story, the quiet danger around him, the subtle restraint… and then those flashes of vulnerability? Absolutely lethal. His dynamic with the FMC is electric in a way that sneaks up on you. The tension builds slowly, deliberately, until suddenly you’re gripping the book and whispering “don’t you dare” at 2 a.m.
The magic system deserves its own paragraph because wow. It’s not just decorative. It shapes the politics, the relationships, the emotional stakes. It feels ancient and intricate and slightly dangerous in a way that makes every spell feel like it could go wrong. You can tell there’s a larger mythology at work here, and it makes the world feel deep and lived-in rather than just a backdrop for romance.
And speaking of world-building—this being a spin-off? Genius. It stands completely on its own, but there are these threads—these hints of a bigger universe—that make everything feel interconnected. I immediately added the original series to my TBR because I refuse to sit here in agony without more lore to obsess over while I wait for book two.
Which brings me to that ending.
That cliffhanger was criminal. Illegal. I stared at the final page for a full five minutes hoping more words would appear. The emotional whiplash?? The reveal?? The implications?? I am equal parts devastated and impressed. It’s the kind of ending that makes you furious—but also proves the author knows exactly what they’re doing.
If you love romantasy with real emotional stakes, a heroine who bleeds and breathes, a dangerously compelling hero, and a magic system that feels fresh and layered—read this. Just be prepared to immediately start campaigning for the sequel.
I’ll be rereading and spiraling in the meantime.
cynthia J, Reviewer
As someone who adored the original series… this felt like coming home and discovering a secret wing of the house I didn’t know existed.
I went into this already emotionally attached to the world, so I was equal parts excited and nervous. Spin-offs can be tricky. But this? This expanded everything in a way that felt intentional and deeply respectful of the lore that came before.
The threads woven in from the original series are chef’s kiss. They’re not heavy-handed. They’re not there just for nostalgia. They feel earned. The political tensions, the old myths we thought we understood, the consequences of choices made in the first series—they ripple beautifully into this story. And the callbacks? I actually gasped when certain names or references appeared. Seeing glimpses of favorite characters—even indirectly—felt like catching up with old friends. It never distracted from the new story, but it absolutely enriched it.
That said, this book stands on its own remarkably well. You could jump in here and follow the plot, the romance, the stakes without confusion. The FMC’s journey is fully realized, and her arc doesn’t rely on prior knowledge to be powerful. But having read the original series first makes the emotional layers so much deeper. You understand the history humming beneath certain conversations. You feel the weight behind specific revelations in a way that hits differently if you already know what came before.
And the romance? Completely its own entity. The MMC is nothing like the heroes from the first series—and I mean that as the highest compliment. He brings a different energy, a different kind of danger, and watching him carve out space in this already beloved universe was thrilling. It proves this world is big enough for more than one epic love story.
The magic system evolves in fascinating ways here too. It builds on foundations laid in the original books but explores corners of it we hadn’t seen before. There were moments where I realized how cleverly the groundwork had been planted all along. It made me want to immediately reread everything just to spot the clues.
And that ending… knowing how this author handles long arcs makes the cliffhanger even more deliciously painful. If the original series taught us anything, it’s that the payoff will be worth the suffering.
If you haven’t read the first series, you absolutely can start here. But if you have? Prepare for a richer, layered experience that feels like uncovering hidden history inside a world you already love.
Now excuse me while I spiral and start theorizing how all of this connects.

I have not stopped thinking about this book since I started reading it. This incredible fantasy romance grabs you instantly and never lets go. And the ending!!! WOW!
Riven is a firecracker of a young lady. She is confident and unapologetic. Toran is deliberate, measured and controlled. Riven is detained after she enters a forbidden realm. She goes through a competition and is entangled in an upheaval of court politics.
This is the same world as Cosette Verga’s debut Fated series, but you can jump in here…no prior reading required to enjoy this fantasy romance.
Can’t wait for Spring 2026 to see what comes next!! Going back to read the Fated series while I impatiently wait.
Thank you to @cosetteverga and @netgalley for the ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
What an absolutely amazing way to kick off a series! I am in awe of this.
The writing style, the characters, the world that’s been created, absolutely everything is flawless. I was absolutely addicted to the story from the start. It is so hard not to spoil this book while reviewing it because from the beginning to that goddamn ending, SO MUCH happened that I’m still in shock over! If you’re thinking about it, stop, just read the book now because oh my god you will not be disappointed!

Ohhhhh THIS is Romantasy. This is my first book by this author and I loved it. I was completely drawn in from the first chapter. I love how it’s sort of a modern world, mobile phones and all, but mixed in with the magic and fae. Riven, a princess with Devine blood accidentally opens a portal to another realm and is discovered by Toren, the enigmatic and (of course) handsome King. Bookmarking this one because I need to read the sequel!!!

I received this book from Netgalley as a Arc - for a review - :)
This is a magical world, we have a princess, and her family - but the princesss and her cousin will go to a "alternate realm" -so cross realm travels. Found love, treachery, death, attempted death, betrayal.
Honestly, this is where I stink at book reviews - I want to give to much away. The priincess loses someone that is dear to her - they die and she blames herself (I think she also loved her more than a friend - at least that is what I felt). She attempts to go to the realm of the dead, but goes to a parallel world.
It was a great story - and there will be a book two - because it cannot be the end. I know I will read the second book - because I want to continue to see what happens to the characters.

Now this is the type of book that gets you both in and out of a reading slump!! Without a doubt my favourite book of the month. I am so great full to Cosette Verga and Netgalley for giving my access to the book.
The world building is easy to follow along and the story keeps you hooked all the way through I read the book in 1 sitting, I just could not put it down. I absolutely love the authors writing style, this is the 1st book of hers I have read, and it definitely won't be the last.
Riven (the fmc) is unapologetically strong minded and I love her for that! I sometimes find that a strong headed fmc and often come across bratty or annoying, Riven is neither of those. Seeing how she turned out has made me want to go read her parents story (The Fated Series).
I will say one moment you are in this fantastical world with castles, ball gowns and trials, but there is also the mention of mobile phones and short leather skirts. But with how Cosette has written it, the illusion doesn't break at all. I stay fully immersed in the world she had written.
Last thing to mention is Taron... that man had me biting my fist, a brooding king who has cast a spell on the his kingdom to stop his little sister from being forgotten!! Not to mention he is covered in ink.
I am OBSESSED and NEED book 2 asap!

I love this story so much! I am so greatful that I was given the opportunity to read this. The Unwritten Heir gave me everything that I wanted in a fantasy book. It has cool magic, court intrigue, spice, banter, mystery, family and drama. I honestly can't think of a single thing that would have made this book better. I do wish I had book 2 in my grasp because what do you mean I have to wait to see what happens?! Overall, Cosette Verga knocked this out of the park. This book reminds me of Cresent City without the dense world building. It was tastefully written and I loved every single page. If you're in search of your next 5☆ read than look no further!

10 stars. I absolutely loved The Unwritten Heir by Cosette Verga, and I CANT believe this book isnt all over everywhere!? I’m fully invested now and already planning to read the rest of her catalog.
This story delivers a king carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders controlled, strategic, and unwilling to bend for anyone. The emotional restraint in his character makes the slow burn romance hit even harder. She has managed to build the tension with intention, letting every glance and interaction mean something, so when that inevitable “f*ck it” moment arrives, it feels completely earned.
Beyond the romance, the internal conflict and sense of duty versus desire give the story depth. If you love powerful MCs who fall hard and slow, and a romance that simmers before it ignites, this one absolutely delivers.
Reviewer 2009881
I absolutely loved this book. I finished it in three days and had a hard time putting it down. The entire time I kept wondering why I hadn’t heard more about it—and why it isn’t getting more attention on BookTok.
The story follows a mortal FMC with magic who accidentally opens a portal to the fae realm and suddenly finds herself pulled into a courting competition for the fae king’s hand in marriage. The fae realm is slowly dying, and as the story unfolds she begins to realize that she might be the key to saving it.
This is a fast-paced story that felt very much like a “vibes” read in the best way. The plot moves quickly, the tension builds steadily, and while the romance starts as a slow burn, the spice definitely picks up toward the end. I’d rate it about 2.5 🌶️ for spice.
The writing felt a little choppy at times, but it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of the story. I was completely invested in the world and the characters.
Also worth mentioning—the author is an indie writer and a mother of seven, which honestly makes what she’s created here even more impressive.
This book is connected to the author’s Fated series, which follows the previous generation before this FMC, and I’m definitely looking forward to diving into those next.

Ooohhh... well, that was rather good!! I really enjoyed Riven's journey and can't wait to see what happens next. It was a real rollercoaster... I did not see that ending coming. I loved Seyla too. I received An ARC and am leaving this honest review voluntarily. I really enjoyed this book and think you will too... recommended.

The Unwritten Heir was an unexpected page turner. By the end of the book, I very much wanted to read another installment. The short prose style was also a nice change from other literary styles I’ve been reading. It was very effective in keeping the plot moving. I do hope there is another book after this, as I definitely left the book ready for more. If magical romatasy is your genre, this one is for you!

This book is fantastic! I now want to read the Fated series. Divine people, forgotten realms, delicious slow burn enemies to lovers and fated mates. The kind of fated mates where he knew as soon as he saw her but she did not. The story follows the FMC through deals, trials, political alliances and strategies all while trying to get back home to her realm. The cliff hanger has me wanting the next book now. Can't wait to continue this journey.

I loved this book. I was fully invested in the characters and I felt the story was unique in some ways which is hard to do when the romantasy genre is so saturated. I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next for Riven and how things tie back in to where we found her in the beginning.
The Unwritten Heir is the 1st book in A Fated Legacies Series by Cosette Verga.
Wow.. I loved reading The Unwritten Heir. It starts out a bit slow at first but after a tragedy the pace picks up. I was pulled into the pages of the world Gardonia of which is filled with unknown magic and pain for the FMC and then I followed the FMC into yet another world Eilowen full of a different kind of people with a powerful magic of which both our FMC and her cousin think of as an Elves as they have pointed ears.
Enter our MMC... Handsome, self assured and very powerful and not an Elf. He is Fae with very powerful Fae magic and a leader of his people. When our MMC meets our FMC there is a pull that he feels but does not let on to the FMC of what it is. They have to work it out together.
The Unwritten Heir hold a secret all the way through it's pages and it held me with in until the very last page. I was intrigued with all that was going on around the FMC and the MMC. There were times I wanted to yell at the MMC to wake up and tell how you actually feel about her of which he did near the end of the book but they had to realize it for themselves.
So, if you like Fae Magic, Hate to Love, Grumpy Sunshine, Shadow Daddy, Intrigue, Romance, Forbidden Portal Travel, Fated Mates, Slow Burn and so much more. I highly suggest that you read The Unwritten Heir.

I absolutely loved reading this romantic fantasy! The slow burn, enemies to lovers, touch her and you die vibes are my favorite kind of tropes. I was so emotionally involved with Riven and Toran there was not one moment where I felt bored. Their characters weren't boring or overly annoying which is always important to the overall vibes of the book. The twists and turns with high stakes had me on the edge of my seat until the very end which made me want to read the next book immediately. This story was definitely giving ACOTAR vibes but held its own and was throughly entertaining. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is in a reading slump or craving a shot of romantasy.
I devoured The Unwritten Heir in only 8.5 hours, and I absolutely loved it.
It gave me that fated mates tension I loved in the ACOTAR series, with subtle Harry Potter / Winx inspired elements, magic that felt vast, and almost limitless. The distinct abilities of each character and the layered realm-building made the world feel completely original, immersive, and uniquely its own.
This was my first taste of Cosette Verga’s writing, and now I’m genuinely excited to read more.
The slow burn was so well done. They don’t even realise they’re fated mates until almost the end, which makes the tension stretch beautifully. Add in layered political scheming and intrigue I genuinely couldn’t predict, and I was hooked the entire time.
One of my favourite dynamics was Toran’s ability to quieten Riven’s uncontrollable powers. The way he could calm the storm inside her felt like a security blanket.
Riven is written so authentically. She’s young, traumatised, sometimes immature and rebellious, but she grows into a fierce and formidable character. She was the perfect match for Toran, who is the brooding, dominant MMC.
And Toran? Once his true character starts peeking through, you’re done. He’s noble, courageous, and self-sacrificing, and his protectiveness over his sister, Seyla, was one of the most wholesome parts of the book. It ties so beautifully into his selflessness. The way he cares for her says everything about who he is at his core.
I also adored how quickly Riven and Seyla bonded. Their relationship felt natural and warm, and it added another emotional layer to the story. Alongside Riven’s ride-or-die dynamic with her cousin, the supporting relationships made the world feel richer and more grounded.
This book was fun, action-packed, politically sharp, emotionally layered, and yes, that slow burn eventually got spicy.
If you’re a romantasy reader, I highly recommend this new series.
Now I just need the sequel because that cliffhanger hurt, and I have to know what happens next for Riven and Toran.
Some romantasy novels rely on spectacle. The Unwritten Heir relies on emotional restraint — and that choice makes it powerful.
Riven is not a recycled “strong heroine.” She is reactive, layered, and deeply human. Her resistance to prophecy feels earned rather than performative. Every decision she makes carries emotional consequence, which grounds the political and magical stakes in something real.
Eilowen is immersive without being overwhelming. The silence-bound court, the curse unraveling beneath the surface, and the prophecy threading through it all create tension that simmers rather than explodes. The worldbuilding feels intentional, not excessive.
And then there’s Toran.
What makes their dynamic compelling isn’t constant confrontation — it’s restraint. Stillness. The tension in what is not said. The slow burn is patient, and because of that patience, the emotional payoff lands hard. The romance develops in a way that feels emotionally driven rather than trope-driven.
This is romantasy built on emotional architecture: fate, political manipulation, sacrifice, and longing all woven together with care. The stakes feel high not just because of magic, but because of what the characters stand to lose.
It stands firmly on its own while expanding the Fated world in a way that feels deliberate and layered. And that ending? It sets up the next installment without undercutting the emotional journey of this one.
For readers who love:
– slow-burn enemies-to-lovers
– political fae courts
– layered magic systems
– morally complex MMCs with quiet intensity
– immersive, emotionally driven fantasy
This is absolutely worth the read!
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Trial is a Sun Queen x ACOTAR.
Riven is gifted with all four divine bloodlines. She accidentally creates a portal and gets dropped in a fae version of the bachelor. The fae world has been trying to break the silence that keeps them hidden from the world. Giving you Velaris vibes but Toran sees how their kingdom is decaying within this silence. Riven questions whether or not Toran is the right person to put her trust in. It’s a fun ride.

I absolutely LOVED this book! It drew you in and it had a lot of dialog between the characters which I feel helps you build relationships with them. The FMC, Riven, was strong and witty and brave. I also loved Toran, the MMC, one of my favorite Book Boyfriends as of now, lol. I can not wait for the second book in the series!!!

I’m obsessed with this world! So when I seen this had come in I jumped right on it! This is the start of a new series set in the same shared universe as the Fated books. As always it’s not required to read the fated series but I would highly recommend to get more of the world building and full rounded story. Reading Fated will help you understand Riven's parents and what happened along the way to her becoming a reality. ❤️🔥😍so, if you haven't read Fated (or the series) you will be just fine reading this book. (But I recommend you read it, you won’t regret it) it adds so much underlying humor and beauty because you know where her parents came from and what they fought against to get to where they are now.
man I’m obsessed with the series I’m so happy start this new series I’m obsessed with!! What a way to start off with the new series! I was not disappointed! Riven is unapologetically herself and I love that about her
Areya and Ash made such a spitfire. 🔥
And that ending!!! To leave us on such a cliff hanger!! I’m done! I need book 2 asap! I’ll be impatiently waiting!

Favorite book of 2026. Loved it and cant wait to explore this author's backlist. It was so good. I am officially in love with Toran and Riven is a firecracker!
This was a fantastic story once I understood the universe. I wish I had a bit more world building at the outset, but once the 'rules' were shared, I couldn't put the book down! The slow-burn of this story was written in such a beautiful and elegant way, not just as a literary element but truly as part of the layered relationship the main characters have. I love a strong FMC heroine and Riven brings the energy. My only struggle was the use of the endearment term "little storm" for more than one character. Cosette has built the foundation for a wonderful world I am ready to get lost in. I am excited to see where this series goes next!
I LOVED this book. The character dynamics were well written and balanced the book. The steamy enemies-to-lovers plot kept me hooked and yearning for more. I loved seeing the story unfold as Riven learns more about the realm she is stuck in and the gravity of the situation around her.
