My son and I read this book together. My son, Ethan, is 6. He will be 7 in 15 days. We both loved the illustrations. They were so colorful and my son's attention during the entire book. This is a great way to teach children about the weather and it's educational and fun! Ethan likes to talk about the weather due to his older sister always giving her weather reports.
Ethan and I want to read Kobee Manatee: Heading Home to Florida, too.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the sidebars. Kids love weather books, and they are always fascinated with the hurricane and tornado scales. I appreciated the drawings of the clouds. Usually they all look pretty much the same. The clouds in this book will be easy to match with real clouds.

The synapsis claims that this "thrilling tale follows Kobee Manatee as he travels across the mighty Atlantic Ocean"... Here is where I went into a stupor. Why would a manatee possibly travel across the Atlantic? Good news, it doesn't. Kobee went from Florida to Bahamas, which hardly can be called "across the Atlantic". It's just the synopsis is really bad.
The forte of the book is illustrations. They are marvelous. Colorful, not too basic, not too detailed, just right for a young reader. Another good thing is accuracy: the content doesn't contradict scientific facts, to a point of course. The story itself though is a completely different story. It's not very exciting, not fully developed, intermittent with "Kobee's fun facts" that sometimes are necessary in the plot, and sometimes are not. It's more like a sketch of a story, for a storyteller to rely on, rather than to read. A bit of a rhythm (or better yet, rhyme) would save it I think. As it is it can't be directly read to kid.
In summary, I recomended the book to our local library. Manatees are not a common subject for a children book, and we certainly need more "unusual" subjects. A quick survey among my son's kindergarden classmates showed that not a single one of them know what a manatee is, which is sad. So combining manatees, weather, and ocean true facts in one colorful book goes a long way in terms of education.

I found the highlight of this book to be the illustrations. The language used for the story itself was rather simple, and the illustrations worked well with it. It certainly provided an interesting tale as Kobee and his friends encountered different weather formations and cloud activity on their journey. I did find some of the facts to be way above what seemed to be the target audience of the book, and I thought other facts out of place in the story (tornadoes for example).

This was quite a fun little book with some lovely images but I didn't really find that the story was as good as the images. The facts that they added did bring a little unexpected extra to the book which was nice. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Kobee the manatee and his friends set off from Florida to the Bahamas for his friend Kim's birthday. On the journey, they encounter various types of weather and events. On each page there is a "fun fact" about the weather or event. I found that sometimes they seem to distract from the story. The illustrations were beautiful and fun.
I did find some of the facts to be way above what seemed to be the target audience of the book, and I thought other facts out of place in the story (tornadoes for example). I would recommend that you read the story to the child first, then go back and go over the fun facts. There is a lot of interesting information in the story.
This would be a great book to use when teaching young children about weather and the dangers of it.
