Description

In this true and deeply personal family saga, Marion and Candace face their most painful battle yet—this time with the gloves off. As Marion’s Alzheimer’s progresses, old wounds reopen and new conflicts tear the family apart. Accusations of elder abuse, manipulation, and betrayal swirl amidst the confusion and heartbreak caused by memory loss and paranoia.

Told through multiple perspectives, What Really Happened to Marion and Candace reveals the tangled web of strained relationships between sisters, children, and extended family members. Tackling the contested custody of cherished heirlooms and the dissolution of a family business, the story lays bare how dementia can distort truth, fracture trust, and isolate even the closest kin.

This unflinching narrative honors the complexity of caregiving and family loyalty, while shining a light on the urgent need for compassion, justice, and reconciliation. For anyone touched by Alzheimer’s—whether as a sibling, child, or grandchild—this book offers a powerful reminder: understanding is the first step toward healing.

Advance Praise

"Cook writes her memoir in a way that reads as comfortably as fiction, and it is a spectacular choice of style that completely changes a reader's ability to connect with it. I love that even the gloves and a quilt have a first-person point of view, and each person, Shane, Candace, Marion, and even Candace's daughter, Rhiannon, among others, shares their perspectives. [...] This is a brilliant account in an art-imitating-life format that can't be missed." - Reader's Favorite

"Cook’s essay chapters are emotionally engaging and resonate deeply. The vignettes strike at the heart in a way that’s vulnerable and real, making What Really Happened to Marion and Candace a balm for anyone who’s experiencing a similar diagnosis or fracturing of their family. Cook writes from a place of understanding that there will never be a satisfying ending with Alzheimer's, and perhaps bearing witness to it is the most powerful thing we can do."
