This book was giving me Pete the Cat meets Nightmare Before Christmas vibes! I really enjoyed it and thought it was super cute and quirky. I think 3 might be slightly too early, not for the story, but for the illustrations, depending on the child. The "storytellers" are a foot, hand, and head with no bodies, and a brain in a jar (they appear on almost every page). They are very cartoon-like, so not overly creepy, but a 3 year old might think it is. That being said, I loved the illustration style, and thought they were very engaging and gave me a lot of interesting details to look at. The story was a little funny and quirky, and then had a kind of sweet ending. This would be the perfect Halloween read!

I found this book so adorable. How can anybody belive this cute little kitty is an evil monster?! But to quote the skull; "We're doomed, DOOMED!!"

Absolutely hilarious with tons of visual humor to match and contrast the dialogue and tons of hidden background details for kids and parents alike to find something new in with each read. My only comment is that it is PERFECT for Halloween...which makes the July pub date a bit odd, but perhaps that is to get ahead of the Back to School and fall prep purchases of school and public libraries.

This quirky picture book will delight young children although they may not catch all the Frankenstein references. The illustrations are just what one would expect to see in a mad scientist's lab. Adults will enjoy reading this book although perhaps not as a bedtime story. The resolution is quick but it is a picture book and not a full novel. I thought Frankenkitty was adorable from the start but his surroundings were frightening. Some illustrations are not for the squeamish but most kids will explore every detail of the contents of the many jars.

Frankenkitty is a creepy, yet surprisingly cute, tale about a cat that's brought to life by an inventor. This book would be a great pick for young readers that are interested in all things mysterious and spooky, even if they may not be ready for truly scary books just yet. There's a dash of humor added to the creepy and macabre plot along with a generous helping of cute and adorable, and then when you least expect it...there's the twist!

Whether parents are cuddling up with their children at home or if a librarian is delivering a creepy program or lesson to library patrons or students, this book will make a fun and interactive read aloud. I highly recommend this book for libraries of all types!

The illustrations in Frankenkitty are genuinely delightful. Mini Grey is one of the most distinctive voices in children's picture book art, and her gothic, whimsical style is perfectly suited to a story about a stitched-together kitten haunting the halls of a spooky castle. Every page is visually rich, playfully detailed, and full of the kind of eccentric charm that makes children lean in for a closer look. If you are buying this book, you are buying it for the pictures — and on that level, it delivers.

The story is a different matter.

The book opens with the inventor crying "It's alive!" — the kitten has been created — and immediately declaring that they are all doomed. No reason is given. His daughter Olive thinks the kitten is cute. Strange things then begin happening around the castle. The inventor declares the house cursed and the cat responsible.

The problem is that nothing in the book — not the text, not the illustrations — ever establishes any connection between Frankenkitty and the household chaos. Things simply happen, with no visual or narrative thread linking them to the cat. The inventor's hysteria has no foundation, comic or otherwise. And the "or did he" ending, which is clearly intended as a playful twist, requires the reader to have spent the book wondering — which is hard to do when the mystery was never actually set up.

The bones of something genuinely charming are here. The misunderstood monster, the child who sees past appearances, the adults who blame the obvious suspect without evidence — these are good ingredients. But the recipe never comes together. The result is a book that looks wonderful, reads quickly, and leaves nothing behind.

For Mini Grey fans and gothic aesthetic enthusiasts, the illustrations alone may justify a place on the shelf. As a story, however, Frankenkitty is a missed opportunity dressed up in very appealing stitches.

“Frankenkitty” is a misunderstood and mismatched…well, Frankenkitty. Some fear him because he is an unnatural creature, but others see that underneath a scary appearance he is a sweet kitty. He is blamed for creepy happenings, but really, he’s just trying to be his kitten self.

Maudie Powell-Tuck tells an endearing story about being different and misunderstood and finding people who “get you.” The book is colorful and the illustrations are detailed enough to go on scavenger hunts to find all that is going on.

This story is great for kids who enjoy stories that are a little bit scary.

Frankenkitty might just be the cutest little monster we have ever met.

My 3 year old and I both loved this book. As a horror lover, my son is always asking for stories like the ones mama reads, and this was absolutely perfect for that. I loved the adorable yet spooky vibes, that were just right for my 3 year old!

The artwork was absolutely adorable and though he is so cute, we are pretty sure it was Frankenkitty all along(he is a cat after all)

I really need to stop reviewing children’s books because I end up wanting to buy every single one.

Also… someone please make a Frankenkitty stuffed animal immediately.

Frankenkitty is great book for Halloween or for anyone who loves monsters and their stories. Frankenkitty is created in a lab and soon after many things go wrong in the castle. Poor Frankenkitty is blamed for everything and is kicked out. Luckily, Olive doesn't believe Frankenkitty did any of the deeds and rescues him...or did he?

The colors and artwork for the story are top notch and bring out the spooky feel. I loved seeing the Frankenstein characters in the story. A great read for spooky season for anyone with little ones who enjoy a good eerie tale.

Oh no! What was created in the lab-Frankenkitty. Things start happening in the castle. It must be the work of Frankenkitty! Or is it really? They put poor Frankenkitty out in the cold, but Olive is there to rescue him. They all realize maybe it’s not Frakenkitty’s doing all those bad things. Hmm-you be the judge.

A cute, silly book that would be great for Halloween.

Maudie Powell-Tuck has captured my ghoulish heart with this adorable children’s book. I am in love with Frankenkitty. It is humorous, a little creep, and a whole lot of adorable all rolled into one. This would be a perfect addition to anyone’s October reading list (or any day if you love Halloween).

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Frankenstein had reanimated a pet? Well, look no further than Frankenskitty. It touches on the original themes of the story of Frankenstein, but it does so in such a way that it isn’t in your face. You have to look a little deeper to see the connection, making it a great tool that could be used at a higher education level, while still being thoroughly entertaining and silly.

This is a story I can see little ones loving and giggling over. The attention to detail the illustrator put in every page had me staring at them longer than actually reading the story. On the surface level, it does seem like a silly, little Halloween read, and it might not be for everyone. However, it touches on themes of kindness and not judging a book (or cat) by its cover (fur). These are great lessons for students to learn, and this book allows that without making it the only focus of the story.

I think my favorite part of this story though is how it’s written. It’s usually hit or miss when a story is written as if the book is directly directly to the reader, breaking the fourth wall, and moving the story to the present. Frankenkitty was able to do this successfully, and the technique added to the uniqueness and fun of the story.

Frankenkitty has the potential in the classroom, if utilized correctly, to be a great learning tool. And, if nothing else, this story will get a few laughs.

This was such a cute and fun read! The art was fantastic. My son just kept pointing at Frankenkitty over and over and meowing. The text is very dramatic and silly, in a way that's fun to read. I did expect a *little* more plot.

Overall, an enjoyable book with great art that's fun to read to your little one! Especially if they love all things spooky, or cats (and my kiddo loves both!).

Readers of all ages are constantly asking for scary and more scary books, even the littles! Here’s a picture book filled all sorts of creepy, ghoulish items throughout a dark and damp haunted home inhabited by a Frankenstein like creator of…FRANKENKITTY!

Maudie Powell-Tuck’s text tells the story of a created cat who may be the one responsible for all the scary things happening in the castle and uses terrific descriptive language including examples of simile, alliteration and plenty of expressive adjectives but it is likely the incredibly detailed illustrations by Mimi Grey that will steal the show and bring readers back to this picture book time and time again, finding something new tucked into each page every time they browse. Would make a great read aloud but teachers/caregivers/librarians should be sure to leave the book out for kids to leaf through after!

A delightfully dramatic, gothic treat for the whole family!

Maudie Powell-Tuck has struck gold again with Frankenkitty. This lively, laugh-out-loud gothic tale is the perfect blend of "giggles and goosebumps," making it a must-have for children ages 3–7 who love their monsters more "cute" than "creepy."

What makes this book a 5-star favorite:
A Misunderstood Hero: The story of Frankenkitty—a stitched-together kitten living in a haunted castle—is both funny and touching. Watching him get blamed for castle mishaps (like Brussels sprouts on the dinner menu!) and his eventual rescue by the brave Olive is sheer joy.

Stunning Visuals: Mini Grey’s freakishly fun art style is a masterclass in detail and humor. The neon green Pantone on the cover makes it pop off the shelf, and the "cheesy-horror" vibes are a love letter to classic gothic parody.

Perfect Read-Aloud: The hilariously dramatic narration is tailor-made for bedtime or a spooky-season story hour. It’s campy, silly, and just a little bit scary, keeping both kids and parents entertained.

As an adult who seeks out children's books that are quirky with just enough creep factor for children, let me tell you how fast I ran to request this ARC. And it did not disappoint. I can just imagine reading this in an eerie, dramatic voice to my class of spook loving 4& 5-year-olds. It is an appropriately done rendition of classic horror using not so spooky things most children (and adults) love...a cat! The illustrations were also noteworthy, with so many creepy things I know the kids will love pointing out!
Be sure and check this book out if you have a monster loving child approximately 3+ (or if you're a horror and cat fan adult like me).

Thank you so much, Tiger Tales and Publisher Spotlight, for the advanced e-book in exchange for my honest review. I look forward to seeing this one on shelves!

"Frankenkitty" is a cute little story about an evil, horrifying, terrifying.... I mean adorable cat.

The content is pretty fluffy. Not much happens in terms of plot, but it does have a few page to page cliffhangers that kept the kiddos engaged.

My wife and I agree, "Frankenkitty" would be a regular reread in our home of 9, 7, and 3 year olds. The illustrations are colorful, unique and definitely have just a touch of creepiness (think Hotel Transylvania)

We usually reserve 5 Star children's book reviews for stories with both style & substance. This book firmly lands in the style without an underlying message. Regardless, this is a great bedtime story & worth it if your kiddos enjoy Halloween & Spooky adjacent books!

I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Obviously cat meets Frankenstein is an automatic request for me! I thought it might be fun to use for a Halloween story time, but I’m not sure it’s a good fit.

An inventor in a spooky castle accidentally creates…a monster! After Frankenkitty’s creation, things start going horribly wrong inside the castle. So he’s put out into the snow, but thankfully rescued by the inventor’s daughter, who can’t resist his cute sad eyes.

It’s a little bit meta (warning readers not to turn the page, suggesting they find books about bears instead), and the illustrations are fun, but something about it feels…underbaked? We jump really quickly from trouble in the castle to kitty in the snow to kitty rescue in like three pages. I’m unclear what the intended age group is - the meta stuff definitely appeals to older kids, but the plot progression is definitely better suited for the short attention spans of preschool kids.

The cover is adorable and I love the illustrations - definitely something that will be eye-catching on a display! Just not quite right for story time.

This book is the CUTEST!

An inventor creates a monster Frankenkitty, and then strange things start happening around the castle, which is obviously the kitty's fault. Only Olive, the inventor's daughter seems to think Frankenkitty is just an innocent cat... or is he?

I love a good gothic kids book. The artwork by Mini Grey is absolutely perfect, it has a whimsical creepy factor to it that plays really well into the story. The text is short enough per page that it would make a great read aloud; and the spooky is very age appropriate. I imagine kids squealing with delight when we get to the brown bananas, or the Brussel sprouts-- TRUE TERROR! It also has a really heartwarming message about friendship at it's core, and not judging a book by it's cover.

A perfect read aloud for Halloween or anytime, with whimsy and humor, Frankenkitty by Maudie Powell-Tuck is a great addition to your spooky collection.

Thank you to NetGalley and Tiger Tales for an ARC of this book!
