Description
‘If I can’t get off – get me out – at any price!’
When millionaire property tycoon Billy Danvers is arrested and awaiting trial for murdering his wife’s lover, his best friend – a respectable city banker – turns to London’s most powerful criminal to pull off the ultimate escape. But when it comes down to huge sums of money, the line between loyalty and betrayal begins to blur.
Miracles Cost Extra is a razor-sharp thriller that delivers a stunningly authentic look at how justice can be bent, bought, or broken. It takes readers deep inside the world of high-stakes prison breaks, underworld fixers, and the shadowy border between law and crime.
Written by Henry Milner, a legal heavyweight who has defended some of Britain's most notorious criminals. With decades of firsthand courtroom experience, the author crafts a story so true-to-life, it could have been ripped from his case files.
‘Drawing on a lifetime defending crime, Milner writes with elegant, compelling clarity; a novel that’s simply a joy to read.’ Judge Rinder
‘A well plotted and thoroughly entertaining tale of lust, murder, bribery, loyalty, betrayal and revenge.' James Morton, Author of Krays: The Final Word

I enjoyed this crime caper written by a former advocate who has a deep and longstanding knowledge of the English legal system.
The plot is clever and original and the characters are well drawn. The action is non-stop and the book never flags.
All in all this is an excellent if fairly light weight legal thriller which examines just how far you will go and treachery and friendship alike.

A thriller that pulls you in and doesnt hide from the darkness of what it takes to get justice or even buy it. And who will be willing to let yhat happen for the right reasons or for money.
Power, money and loyalty takes you into the shadows. And what power that brings is something that gets the brain ticking.
Billy needs all on his side when he is accused of killing his wife's lover.and from then on he takes you into a workd youd never meet and for good reasons.
Its so interesting to step into this world. Its one as a reader most of us won't get to peak into. On both sides of the law, innocent or bought innocent, biases and all the inner workings that must bring so much real and problems to all systems and potentially not for the good of the innocent or vulnerable.
And you quickly learn and see how one wrong turn or weave into the wrong kind of systems, beleifs, bought power is never just an inch in,you are then all the way into the darkness with consequences to follow.
Becsuse what do people do without money? Lost to a system that will never be on their side?
The pacing is great. It feels like a ride but also one filled with realness. And it took me alot deeper into how I thought about things too.

Miracles Cost Extra is one of those thrillers that pulls you straight into the shadows of power, money, and loyalty, and keeps you there, watching the lines blur in real time. It opens with a jolt: millionaire Billy Danvers, accused of murdering his wife’s lover, suddenly desperate enough to utter the chilling plea, “If I can’t get off – get me out – at any price.” From that moment, the novel becomes a tense, twisting descent into the world of underworld fixers and high‑stakes escape plans.
What makes this story so compelling is how grounded it feels. Henry Milner writes with the kind of clarity and confidence that only comes from someone who has lived inside courtrooms and negotiated with the people most of us only read about. Every conversation, every negotiation, every threat carries that unsettling ring of truth. You can feel the weight of favours owed, debts called in, and the quiet menace of men who operate outside the law but understand it better than anyone.
The friendship at the heart of the novel—a respectable banker turning to London’s most dangerous criminal to save Billy—adds a fascinating emotional tension. Loyalty becomes a currency, and as the sums grow larger, so does the temptation to betray. Milner captures that moral erosion beautifully: the way good intentions warp under pressure, the way fear and greed twist even the closest bonds.
The pacing is taut, the atmosphere thick with danger, and the authenticity is what truly elevates it. The abandoned warehouses, the coded conversations, the legal manoeuvring, the sense that justice is something flexible in the right hands—it all feels disturbingly plausible. And when the truth finally snaps into place, it lands with the force of a gavel.
Sharp, gripping, and steeped in real‑world grit, Miracles Cost Extra is a thriller that feels as though it could have been lifted straight from a confidential case file. A dark, compelling look at the price of freedom—and the even higher cost of betrayal.
