Description
A brilliantly funny story about empathy, kindness, and the importance of not judging a book by its cover... or, in this case, a mole by his mound!
Mole is on a mission to build an extraordinary shelter for him and his friends. But Bird, Beaver, and Bee don't see what the fuss is about - who would want to spend time in a muddy, moldy mound when they could be enjoying Bird's impressive nest, Beaver's incredible lodge, or Bee's intricate hive?
One by one, they rush to build their own, far superior, homes, failing to notice a storm that is on its way. When it finally arrives, Bird, Beaver, and Bee's houses are destroyed, and they are forced to seek shelter inside Mole's mound! It becomes clear that this seemingly ordinary mound is much more extraordinary on the inside.
Scoop, wiggle-wiggle, went the mole.
Working on his great, grand hole.
HILARIOUS READ-ALOUD: The bouncy rhyming text and funny story make for a perfect read aloud.
BUILDING COMMUNITY: Mole and his friends learn that helping each other in times of need not only provides support but creates a sense of belonging.

I read this with my 4 year old granddaughter and she thought it was very sweet and funny. She loved the story and said she would rate it 5 stars.
Exciting graphics to look at. I love how there was a variety of shapes and sizes of graphics throughout the book to keep the eye entertained. The story not only is educational and entertaining, but it taught a compelling lesson in the end — one even I wasn't expecting. Lovely surprise and a great read for the kiddos!
The Mole and the Mound by Will Hamilton-Davies is a beautifully crafted story that manages to be both exciting and deeply philosophical. It follows a little mole on a journey of discovery that carries a powerful message about perspective and the environment.
Timeless Storytelling: The narrative has the feel of a classic fable. It’s a wonderful exploration of how we see the world, teaching kids (and reminding adults) that what we perceive as a "mountain" might just be a small part of a much bigger picture.
Atmospheric Art: The illustrations by Patrick Corrigan are stunning. They use a rich, earthy palette that perfectly captures the underground world and the beauty of the British countryside, making it a very "cozy" read-aloud.
Gentle Life Lessons: It handles themes of ambition and contentment with a light touch, making it a great conversation starter for children about appreciating nature and understanding their place within it.
The Mole and the Mound is a cute picture book (loosely) about the types of homes different animals make. It is written in rhyme and would be a great read aloud. Each animal thinks they know the best type of home to make and don't want to go in Mole's mound, that's up until a storm starts. The illustrations are whimsical and not hyper realistic, but are definitely cute for kids.

This heartwarming story centers on a friendly competition where each character proudly shares their home, celebrating what makes it special. A standout favorite is the mole, whose humble mound surprises everyone and becomes a meaningful reminder not to judge by appearances.
The book beautifully highlights how every home is unique, with its own charm and features, while reinforcing the idea that differences should be celebrated rather than compared. My daughter and I especially loved the message that we don’t all have to be the same to feel connected—true joy comes from embracing individuality and community.
