Description

The chilling and revelatory story of how Russia’s confrontation with the West went global.

Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 produced a rupture with the United States and Europe not seen since the Cold War. As a result, Russia refocused its entire state machinery on one purpose: To outlast the West.

Russia foreign policy analyst Hanna Notte uncovers how Russia reinvented itself, outmaneuvering sanctions, forging surprising alliances, charming the Global South, and sowing fear in Western societies. Putin is the one pulling the strings, but he is not the only player: Propagandists, diplomats, businessmen, and rogue agents have done Russia’s bidding. From civilian shelters to military bases, presidential palaces to tense borderlands, Notte chronicles the untold stories of those waging Russia’s battles—and of everyday people swept up in Putin’s agenda. Blending analysis with reportage from more than a dozen countries, We Shall Outlast Them paints a sweeping picture of Putin’s wartime adaptation and illuminates how Russia has fostered enduring appeal around the globe.

About the Author: Hanna Notte is the director of the Eurasia Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies and has written about Russian foreign policy in the New York Times, the Financial Times, and Foreign Affairs, among others. She lives in Berlin.

Advance Praise

"In this timely book, Hanna Notte draws on extensive interviews to map out Putin’s efforts to stay one step ahead of Western attempts to cut Russia off economically and politically. Notte’s wide-ranging approach and attention to detail make this compelling reading for those interested in understanding how the world has changed since the invasion of Ukraine." -Fiona Hill, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's Center on the United States and Europe and author of There is Nothing For You Here

"Incisive. Rather than portraying Russia as either twelve feet tall or on the verge of collapse, Notte offers a far more convincing and refreshingly unsensational picture: a state that learns, improvises, and exploits global fractures, particularly beyond the West. We Shall Outlast Them will shape debates about Russia—and Western strategy—for years to come." -David McCloskey, former CIA analyst and bestselling author of The Persian

"Hanna Notte tells a story that has long been obscured: Russia is waging war not only on Ukraine, but on the West as a whole, exploiting its weaknesses, undermining its unity, and ensuring that it outlasts the resolve of democratically elected leaders. Well researched and beautifully written, this book provides a global context for the war that too many consider to be local. " -Serhii Plokhy, the author of Nuclear Age: An Epic Race for Arms, Power, and Survival

"A masterclass in modern statecraft—Hanna Notte reveals the staggering reality of a Russia that has reoriented its entire national apparatus to sustain a global war machine. A necessary and deeply researched warning about a nation that will be defined by this confrontation for generations to come. " -Jake Sullivan, Former White House National Security Adviser and Professor of Practice at Harvard Kennedy School

"In this timely book, Hanna Notte draws on extensive interviews to map out Putin’s efforts to stay one step ahead of Western attempts to cut Russia off economically and politically. Notte’s...
