Description

A grumpy/sunshine, enemies-to-lovers slow burn set on the sun-soaked French Riviera! Perfect for fans of Jennifer Bohnet, Katie Fforde and Beth O’Leary.

‘It wasn’t as if I fancied Luc Mandeville; I didn’t even like the man.’

A well-paid Christmas job cooking for a wealthy English family in their luxurious holiday home on the French Riviera – what’s not to like? Or so thinks Alix Bailey: private chef and single parent who is always up for a challenge.

With her son, Carl, off skiing with his father, what could possibly go wrong? Answer: absolutely everything.

True, the Villa Matisse would be a dream if its rude, arrogant owner, Luc Mandeville, weren’t such a nightmare. But Alix isn’t one to give up easily, even when it seems she’s made a terrible mistake. And if she’s misjudged the recipe for romance, well, that’s hardly a first. As for facing a few uncomfortable truths about herself, Alix can deal with that. She’s made of sterner stuff. All she has to do is cook her way out of trouble.

An enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy that serves up heat, heart and a pinch of chaos.

A Note From the Publisher

After many years living in France, Jane Jennings is now back in the English county where she was born. Even so, her romantic comedies Nothing Like a Dream and The Villa Matisse are set in the country she still adores. Profoundly deaf, Jane lip-reads — a skill that occasionally leads to unintentional eavesdropping. When she’s not writing, she can usually be found reading or out on a walk, ideally one that ends at a pub.

The Villa Matisse was such a charming and atmospheric romance. The French Riviera setting added so much to the story — it felt warm, escapist, and full of personality, and it made the whole book really easy to sink into.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Alix and Luc. Their grumpy/sunshine, enemies-to-lovers chemistry was fun without feeling overly dramatic, and the banter between them kept the story moving at a really nice pace. Luc definitely starts off frustrating, but watching the layers come down over time made the romance feel believable.

Alix was probably my favorite part of the book though. She felt mature, resilient, and realistic as a single mother trying to balance work, family, and her own happiness. I liked that the story focused not just on romance, but also on her personal growth and confidence.

The cooking elements and villa setting gave the story such a cozy feel, and even with the lighter rom-com tone, there were still emotional moments that gave the characters depth.

Overall, this was a warm, entertaining enemies-to-lovers romance with beautiful scenery, lovable characters, and a good balance of humor and heart. Perfect for readers looking for an easy, feel-good escape with a touch of slow-burn romance.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
