I love this author’s books because you always get a bit of a spooky, ghostly read, and I really enjoyed this one. Elin and her sister Nerys never got closure on their mum, who went out one evening and never came home. That night there was a bad storm, and a young man also went missing. The police said the sea took them, but their Nan never got over it. Elin leaves the village to start a new life with her partner, Cai. When Cai is working on a dig in her home village, he is killed in a hit-and-run, so Elin returns to her old town. I won’t say more, but it’s so good—very twisty!

Elin returns home after hearing about a tragic accident on the coast — the same bay where she lost her beloved mother ten years earlier when she was swept out to sea during a terrible storm.

Already struggling beneath the weight of her grief, Elin agrees to try something that sounds both fascinating and incredibly unsettling: a grief hologram, a digital reconstruction of a loved one designed to help people cope with bereavement.

At first, the experience seems to offer Elin some comfort. But that comfort doesn't last.

When the hologram appears to take on a life of its own and says something that connects the recent death to the death of Elin's mother, everything changes. 👀

Suddenly, what seemed like a way of processing grief becomes something much darker.

I absolutely loved the premise of this book. The idea of being able to recreate someone you've lost is fascinating enough on its own, but adding the possibility that the reconstruction knows something it shouldn't know makes the whole concept incredibly creepy. 😳

The atmosphere was another huge highlight for me. The Anglesey coastline and the memories surrounding Elin's mother's death create such a haunting backdrop, and I could really feel the isolation and unease building throughout the story.

There is a brilliant sense of psychological suspense running through the book. You're constantly questioning what Elin should believe and whether what she's experiencing can really be explained.

And then there's the biggest question of all…

What really happened ten years ago? 🌊

I loved watching the pieces slowly begin to come together. The connection between the two deaths gives the story a compelling mystery, while the threat against Elin raises the stakes and keeps the tension building.

The grief element also adds a real emotional depth. This isn't simply a thriller about a mysterious technology — it's also about loss, memories and the desperate lengths we might go to in order to reconnect with someone we've loved and lost.

I really enjoyed the way those emotional themes were woven into the suspense.

There were definitely moments where I had that wonderful thriller feeling of wanting to tell the character “Don't do it!” 😂😱

And the atmosphere just keeps getting darker.

If you enjoy psychological thrillers with creepy technology, family secrets, grief, mysterious deaths, atmospheric settings and twists that make you question everything, this is definitely one to add to your TBR.

It's unsettling, emotional and wonderfully chilling, with a premise that stayed in my head long after I put my Kindle down.
