Description
‘A beautiful celebration of sisterhood, true love, and embracing ourselves inside and out’ Marissa Meyer
Princess Kit is dreading the royal ball. Her beloved step-sister Catharine will debut to society, while Kit plans to hide in the shadows and avoid the unwanted attentions of her step-father, the king. Everything changes when she meets Prince Idris, who somehow sees through her guarded facade.
Idris, however, hides a dark truth of his own. He has made a deal to atone for an ancestor’s crime against the fae queen and is now cursed to dance to death. And he is not the only one striking dangerous bargains with the fae. When an enchantment curses Kit and Catharine to switch bodies, they must work with Idris to untangle their ill-fated inheritance. But in the fae realm, breaking a curse always demands a price…

A retelling that successfully blends Scottish folklore with a poignant exploration of trauma, chronic illness, and family dynamics.
The standout element of the novel is the profound bond between stepsisters Kit and Catharine. Hollingsworth handles sensitive themes, including Kit’s history of abuse and her experience with a debilitating wasting sickness, with immense care and nuance. When a fae enchantment forces the sisters to swap bodies, Kit’s internal conflict over suddenly being free of her physical suffering versus the guilt of leaving her sister in that position is handled beautifully.
Prince Idris makes for a compelling companion, carrying his own heavy narrative weight with a dark family curse that threatens his life. The alternating perspectives between Kit and Idris provide excellent depth, and the slow-burn romance feels earned and touching.
The world-building is rich and windswept, effectively transporting readers to a magical, historical version of the Scottish Isles where bargains with the Hidden Folk carry genuine stakes. My only minor critique is that the pacing slows down noticeably in the middle section as the characters travel, and a few of the plot resolutions near the end feel slightly too convenient given the immense build-up.
However, the emotional payoff and the emphasis on healing and mutual resilience make it an incredibly worthwhile read. It is a strong four-star book that fans of character-driven, folklore will thoroughly enjoy.
