Description
Casey McQuiston meets Heartstopper in this sapphic young adult romance.
Cami is a 15-year-old lesbian, one of the few out queer students at her conservative boarding school for international students in Italy. She just wants to focus on getting her paintings in a student gallery and kickstarting a vaunted art career—but first, she’ll have to survive the next two-and-a-half years of bullying. Seeking respite from her roommate’s cruelty one night, she hides out in a bathroom—only she’s not the only one there.
Nat is a senior, closeted even from herself, whose homophobic, missionary parents are pressuring her to win valedictorian. A year younger than her peers at 16, she’s still the head of her class, the fastest runner on the cross country team, and the captain of the girls’ soccer team, but her depression and insomnia keep her up all night. She takes refuge in the ground-floor bathroom where Cami shows up one night.
As they spend time together over the following nights and Cami shows Nat how poorly the school treats queer people, the two girls concoct a mildly hare-brained scheme: to create an undercover Genders & Sexualities Alliance (GSA) where queer students and allies can bond. They don’t expect so many kids to find a home with them.
And they certainly don’t expect to fall for each other.

On one hand, this book is so cute and had me giggling and kicking my feet. But the titular Nat and Cami along with their group of friends are also incredibly powerful and angry and and brave and willing to fight against a hateful system and it was so cathartic to have both those sides coexist. The friendships are well-developed and heartfelt and the romance is sweet and angsty in all the right ways. This is a must read debut from an author who will no doubt become a bookshelf staple.
Cami is an openly queer student at a very conservative Italian boarding school. She has a crush on Nat, the popular captain of the cross-country and soccer teams and likely valedictorian. Nat, who struggles with depression, meets Cami in the bathroom one night because neither of them can sleep. As their friendship grows, Nat witnesses the school’s homophobia. To change the toxic culture and stop the bullying from teachers and students, Nat and Cami create a secret GSA. When Cami’s roommate rats them out, someone needs to take the fall for going against the school’s rules. It’s a sweet love story I wish had been available to read when I was in high school.
There were so many things I loved! First of all, it was set in Italy. I wanted to eat all the gelato while reading it. I loved the characters and how the students came together to form a secret society that fights the patriarchy to create a better school for everyone. It’s a sweet love story that I wish had been available to read when I was in high school.

This has been my absolute BEST read of the year so far. The description of the queer experience from two opposing perspectives was so beautiful and I loved the different kinds of representation that the book provided.I cannot b elieve that this is the author's first foray into writing fiction because I am so incredibly impressed. Nat and Cami and the rest of the GSA feel like my own personal queer friends that I never had growing up. Incredible writing and the sweetest story and I cannot WAIT for what the author comes up with next!!
