In this tour de force of psychological suspense, bestselling author Lisa Black draws from her experience as a forensic investigator to create two of the most fascinating characters in crime fiction: a killer with a unique sense of justice and a woman in a lifelong relationship with death…
That Darkness
As a forensic investigator for the Cleveland Police Department, Maggie Gardiner has seen her share of Jane Does. The latest is an unidentified female in her early teens, discovered in a local cemetery. More shocking than the girl's injuries--for Maggie at least--is the fact that no one has reported her missing. She and the detectives assigned to the case (including her cop ex-husband) are determined to follow every lead, run down every scrap of evidence. But the monster they seek is watching every move, closer to them than they could possibly imagine.
Jack Renner is a killer. He doesn't murder because he enjoys it, or because he believes himself omnipotent, or for any reason other than to make the world a safer place. When he follows the trail of this Jane Doe to a locked room in a small apartment where eighteen teenaged girls are anything but safe, he knows something must be done. But his pursuit of their captor takes an unexpected turn.
Maggie Gardiner finds another body waiting for her in the autopsy room--and a host of questions that will challenge everything she believes about justice, morality, and the true nature of evil …

“The intriguing
forensic details help drive the plot to its satisfying conclusion.”– Publishers

“Black is one of the best writers of the world of
forensics, and her latest introduces Maggie Gardiner, who works for the
Cleveland Police Department. Her relentless pursuit of answers in a dark world
of violence is both inspiring and riveting. Readers who enjoy insight into a
world from an expert in the field should look no further than Black. Although
Cornwell is better known, Black deserves more attention for her skillful
writing – and hopefully this will be her breakout book.”– RT Book

That Darkness is the first in a new series by Lisa Black. Maggie is a forensic investigator that is obsessed with details and is very good at it. Jack is a cop that is obsessed with vengeance for a death in his past. They say the devil is in the details and this book is filled with details. Most of the time, too many and the story moves very slowly. The ending does show promise for the next in the series.

Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington books for an ARC in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book and liked the two main characters. Maggie is a forensic investigator who goes way outside her remit in searching for clues and trying to find details to solve the murders of the numerous bodies that are turning up in the city of Cleveland. Jack is a cop but doesn’t operate strictly within the law. Is he a vigilante? A revenge killer? Is he doing the public a service by removing certain inHe is obsessed with tracking down a woman called Maria Stein – but we find little details of why that is in the beginning of the book. Lots of detail in this book which does slow the pace a bit but an enjoyable read if you like the crime genre. Looking forward to the next book in the series to see how the story progresses.

That Darkness is the first book in the new Gardiner and Renner police/suspense series. It is a well written and professionally edited full length novel.
This is not a fast paced, shoot 'em up (though there is some shooting) plot. I would call it a cerebral police/suspense plot. All in all it was the perfect book for me. Not so detailed to be boring, but it does show the plodding tenacity that it actually takes to solve complex crimes.
Gardiner is a forensics specialist and is a very focused police department geek. She leaves her lab to investigate when she discovers similarities between a rash of unsolved murders. Renner is the homicide detective that has stepped over the line to stop criminals from continuing to victimize their communities.
I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I want it now!

This book reminded me a bit of the show Dexter. Cop serial killer BUT vigilante or killer? You will have to read this suspenseful captivating read to find out. Although the book could have kept some of the forensic knowledge and focused a bit more on the story I still found this to be a great read! I liked the two main characters Maggie and Jack they are very believable characters. I would recommend to anyone who likes a suspenseful book to read. Loved! Look forward to reading more of Lisa Black's books.
