I don’t know why Masterton isn’t a household name in the U.S. He simply writes some of the best suspense novels being published today. In the newest entry in the DS Katie Maguire series, there are two story lines that converge. The first relates to the mummified remains of a family found underneath their Blarney cottage, where they have been entombed for nearly 100 years. The second plot line involves gangster Bobby Quilty, a man who seems to be Teflon coated, he’s been able to get off from all his crimes. Katie wants to take him down, but Quilty is having none of it, and to keep Katie off his back, he kidnaps her former lover John Meagher. Meagher’s bid for escape goes terribly wrong and Katie is forced to take a long hard look at herself and the choices she’s made. I love this series. Katie is sharp, sarcastic and dedicated. Masteron’s view of life in Ireland and the Garda is fascinating. If you haven’t read his work, do yourself a big favor and start today

DS Katie Maguire has to find who may have killed the whole family and pets and buried them under the old millworker’s cottage when it is discovered by the men prying up the floorboards. She is also on the trail of the man who is responsible for selling tax free cigarettes and breaking many other laws in his criminal enterprises. When she gets close he kidnaps her estranged lover and now she has to make sure that no harm comes to him all the while trying to arrest the lawbreakers. Another good read featuring DS Katie Maguire. I would like to thank the Publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this ARC.
