This book was honestly a complete fever dream—in the best possible way.

Going into it, I thought I was getting something closer to a thriller or slasher with feminist revenge themes, especially based on the synopsis. Instead, what I got was something far stranger, more surreal, and much harder to define. And honestly, that's part of what made the experience so memorable.

For a large portion of the book, I genuinely had no idea what was happening.

Characters appear seemingly out of nowhere, storylines twist in unexpected directions, and there's this constant feeling that you're only seeing part of a much larger picture. At times it felt chaotic, but there was also something incredibly compelling about simply surrendering to the story and letting it take you wherever it wanted to go.

One of my favorite aspects was the structure. The screenplay-style writing was such an interesting choice and made the story feel incredibly cinematic. It genuinely felt like I was watching some bizarre, genre-bending indie film unfold rather than reading a traditional novel.

I also loved that the story was set in Thailand. It's not a setting I encounter often, and it added so much atmosphere and uniqueness to the reading experience. The cultural details and setting helped ground an otherwise wildly unpredictable narrative.

What impressed me most was how many seemingly random details ended up mattering later. There were multiple moments where I realized something I had dismissed earlier was actually clever foreshadowing. Looking back, the book is far more carefully constructed than it initially appears.

That said, it definitely takes a while to get going. The beginning felt confusing at times, and because there are so many characters and strange events introduced early on, I occasionally struggled to understand where the story was heading.

But once the pieces started coming together, I found myself completely invested.

And the ending? I never would have predicted it.

Not even close.

This is one of those books that's almost impossible to describe without spoiling what makes it special. It's weird, unpredictable, darkly funny, surprisingly thoughtful, and unlike anything else I've read recently.

If you're looking for a straightforward thriller, this probably isn't it. But if you're willing to embrace the chaos and go along for a very strange ride, you'll likely have a lot of fun with it.

This was a journey. This story reads like a fever dream. I was not certain to understand what was really happening. A lot of characters were introduced without really knowing what their purpose. I liked how it was written like a movie script, it was an interesting choice. I feel like the summary is maybe a bit misleading, I was expecting thriller/slasher book, maybe with a touch of feminism as Samsaen is taking her revenge. That’s not what happened at all. I can’t quite describe what this book is without spoiling it. I think you just have to read for yourself and enjoy the ride. It’s definitely an unexpected story, I never could’ve imagine how it was going to end. It does take some time before it really gets going. I liked the writing, the translation was great! Overall, it’s a good book and it was fun to read a story set in Thailand. The story structure was very different and some details that looked random were actually foreshadowing which I liked. It’s definitely worth reading !

Sex Doll Goddess by Jadet Kamjorndet is one of the most original and unpredictable novels I’ve read. What starts as an absurd premise quickly evolves into a thought-provoking story that blends satire, science fiction, dark humor, and surprisingly heartfelt emotion. Rather than relying on shock value, the novel explores loneliness, identity, love, and what it truly means to be human.

The characters are flawed yet compelling, and the story constantly shifts in unexpected directions while maintaining an emotional core. The surreal elements and offbeat humor won’t appeal to every reader, but if you’re open to unconventional fiction, they’re part of what makes the book so memorable.

The translation reads smoothly, preserving the novel’s distinctive voice and making its blend of comedy and philosophical reflection accessible to English readers.

Overall, Sex Doll Goddess is a bold, imaginative novel that challenges expectations and lingers in your mind long after the final page. It’s a great choice for readers who enjoy literary fiction with speculative elements and aren’t afraid of stories that take creative risks.

Translated from Thai, Sex Doll Goddess is such an unexpectedly easy and enjoyable read, and as a professional translator myself, it really made me appreciate the art of translation even more. Translating a book is so much more than simply moving words from one language to another; it requires an understanding of tone, culture, context, humour, and all those little details that make a story feel natural in another language. The fact that I never felt like I was “reading a translation,” but rather an English book that stood completely on its own, is probably the biggest compliment I can give to the translator.

As someone currently studying Thai, I had so much fun catching the little references to Southern Thailand, the language notes, and those details that made the setting feel even more alive.

The story itself is wonderfully quirky, fun, and surprisingly well-built. With a title like Sex Doll Goddess, you might expect something completely over-the-top, but I actually found the story much more balanced than I anticipated. It has plenty of weirdness and humour, but it never feels like it is trying too hard. The short chapters also made it incredibly easy to follow and kept the story moving at a really nice pace.
