The Hospital for Mythological Creatures is an adorable and child-friendly way to learn about the Emergency Room. I myself am an emergency room nurse. I think this book is a great way to help kids understand the world around them if they or a loved one is in a situation where the child is exposed to a hospital environment. The subject matter is handled delicately, and kid-friendly. The mythological aspect takes away the immediate reality of a child's hospital experience and presents it in a whimsical way. The information is accurate and the illustrations are beautiful.

Kudos to author Cathy Evans for realizing that the best way to convey accurate information about hospitals was through imaginary creatures. The various medical professionals at this hospital competently and compassionately handle a car crash at Shangri-La Avenue, allowing children to see how hospitals aren’t really scary places. They learn about procedures, machinery and protocols that keep patients alive and help them recover.

“The Hospital for Mythological Creatures” by Cathy Evans, illustrated by Ed J. Brown, is a fun yet educational book that introduces children to the health and medical world.

It tells the story of Lisa and Daisy who are injured in an accident. They must visit the hospital for mythological creatures to attend to their wounds — a broken arm and a head wound. It takes the reader step by step, from an ambulance ride, to the emergency room, the role of paramedics, surgery, wound care, X-rays, blood tests and so on — all while making the characters fantastical creatures like unicorns, vampires (including Vlad the pathologist), gnomes and Frankenstein’s monster.

Ed J. Brown’s illustrations are bright and colorful and full of activity, almost like a graphic novel. This book will walk a child through what will happen if they need to visit a hospital for either themselves or a loved one, and what happens with the body and how to “fix” it.

“The Hospital for Mythological Creatures” is recommended for ages 5-9 years, but I think it would be good for children slightly older too. It is due out Aug. 4.

A fun way for kids to learn about hospitals. The illustrations at great, and the story does a wonderful job taking you through a tour of the hospital and meeting all the friendly staff. This is a great book to help make hospitals less scary.
My only critique is that I wanted to know more about the mythological creatures. The book does a great job on the healthcare side of things, but I would have loved a little more info as there were several I wasn't familiar with.

Very cute but also thorough. It takes the reader on a tour of a hospital and hits all the departments and describes the job of each one. The reader will learn everything from the triage nurse to the radiology department to how labs are done and tested. Even the pharmacy and call center are included.

As a homeschool mom, I will definitely be including this book into our unit about the Human Body.

Adored the illustrations in this book! It is a very informative book, to the point it made me wonder if it should go in the non-fiction section of the library. The text was educational without being too confusing for children, and included every person/job that keeps hospitals running smoothly. I really enjoyed how this book introduces children to getting bloodwork, what happens when you have a broken bone, and even why elderly people sometimes need knee replacements (or several for one mythological creature in the book). Definitely a good way to make children more comfortable with hospitals and medical experiences that they may encounter with themself. friends, family members, etc.

I absolutely adored this book and I can't wait to add it to my collection.

Cathy Evans did an amazing job that understanding kids have big imaginations and learning important things like medical terms helps when they have fun pictures to look at and enjoy.

Ed Brown's artistic abilites shine with this childrens book.

A super cute way to get kids comfortable with hospitals and emergency procedures. The drawings are creative, and I found myself enjoying the storylines as the characters moved through the hospital.
