I honestly am having difficulty expressing how much I have enjoyed reading The Epic of Eden, by Sandra L. Richter!! After 3 years in seminary I grew very used to long and tedious books on the Bible that really made you work for a glimmer of something interesting or new. This book is like a drink of fresh water in the desert.

It is accessible to lay people without sacrificing quality. It is very successful, in my opinion, of revealing the substructure of the Old Testament to reveal how it all fits together. The themes that are continuous throughout, the Ancient Near East idiosyncrasies that are foreign to the modern reader. All of it is very well done. It isn't super lengthy. You can read it at a leisurely pace and learn valuable insight into how things work.

I was familiar with much of the material from my studies but found myself surprised with little nuggets here and there. One example, when Genesis talks about the sweat on man's brow during the scene of the Fall of Adam and Eve...it is through out modern understanding thought to mean through hard work. But in the Ancient Near East, it meant anxiety!! With anxiety now man must face the world after having eaten the forbidden fruit. Such a pearl of insight.

I would recommend this to individual Christians, small groups, pastors, and churches as a great resource!

I am grateful to IVP Academic through Net Galley for the free advance reviewer copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
