Description

In a city ruled by surveillance, death is no longer the end. It is just another product.

Phoenix, 2104. Detective Nate Wartman is assigned a high-stakes case: solve a string of brutal corporate murders at Arc Systems, the world’s most powerful virtual reality conglomerate.

But the bodies are just the beginning.

Alongside his hacker partner, Jane, Nate uncovers a conspiracy that shatters the boundaries of human existence—evidence that human consciousness can be copied, controlled, and permanently erased.

As a global investigation spirals out of control, whistleblowers vanish and digital ghosts begin to speak. Nate realizes that every lead he has followed was manipulated by unseen forces, and his own reality is starting to feel like a staged memory.

To expose the truth, Nate must decide what he is willing to sacrifice: his badge, his identity, or his own mind.

Advance Praise

"Digital enhancements rule the world in this chilling distant-future SF. Ra successfully creates a future world that offers cutting-edge technology but, at the same time, blurs the line between reality and AI. A mind-bending, inventive spin... gripping and invitingly unpredictable. Great for fans of Richard K. Morgan’s Altered Carbon and William Gibson’s Neuromancer."

Classic cyberpunk book that blends reality. Somewhat repetitive and tough to try to realize what is real and isn't real. Could be a great movie.

First of all, thanks to the author and NetGalley for kindly providing me with this book.

This is a cyberpunk with a classic trope where everything gets resolved in an old-school style, with a different, interesting plot twist at the end. The main character is described as worn-out, and I kept thinking this guy must be around 50 or so, but turns out he’s only 29. And then, out of nowhere, a romance subplot suddenly appears.

What started out as just another routine day in the life of a police detective in the not too distant future turns into something else entirely. Someone has been killing tech geeks, and the government's investigative agency seems to be involved, perhaps covering for the killers somehow. And, as in crime thrillers of the not too distant past, the detective and his partner are suspended when they fail to give up and toe the line of the cover up. And, of course, once suspended, they are free to investigate without being tied to official procedures and rules. I really enjoyed this novel. Fans of science fiction like Snowcrash may especially like this novel,, with reality bending technology that expands the parameters within which humans operate. The biggest challenge may be making the worldbuilding easier to absorb, always a bit tricky when dealing with technology we have never experienced yet, and I am hoping in the next book we get more scenes of everyday life to make it easier to stay absorbed and follow the complexities of the plot. Fun genre blende, and I'm looking forward to the next book.
