This was an interesting collection of short stories with a nice variety of settings, characters, and themes. I especially liked the way several of the stories revealed little details that made more sense as the story unfolded. Some stories stood out to me more than others, but overall it was a thoughtful collection with some interesting ideas about mystery, relationships, and the unseen.

Intrigue: Stories of Mystery and Transcendence (Palm Branch Publishing, 2026) is a wide-ranging anthology that earns its title on both halves. The dozen-plus contributors don't just chase plot twists — the "transcendence" side shows up constantly, in stories built around characters uncovering a truth that changes who they are, not just what they know. B.D. Lawrence opens with "Mother's Comfort," a quietly devastating piece set in an Indian village that turns into magical realism at the exact right moment. From there the collection swings hard: Rick Coffin and Kelley Rene both mine financial pressure — one an embezzlement scandal inside a state agency, the other a newlywed straining under debt and distance — for real emotional stakes. Sandi MarLisa's "The Witch of Stone Lake" and Christian Emecheta's corporate-conspiracy thriller "Green Lies, Open Eyes" show just how far the collection is willing to stretch genre, from folklore-tinged fantasy to whistleblower suspense. The prose quality varies some story to story, as anthologies do, but the editorial throughline is genuinely coherent — every piece is about someone seeing past a comfortable lie. A solid pick for readers who like their mystery with a little soul attached.
