Description
Starry-eyed Adae wants to see dark matter, ultraviolet light, and where consciousness goes after death, to prove the unseen persists. When she finds herself in a city made of glass, full of shapeshifters with dimensions for which she has no names, Adae begins to suspect that grief and joy share the same architecture.
In the Glass City, a medic commits a crime whose verdict breaks dimensions open—allowing consciousness to shapeshift. Into this world Adae arrives: where the weight of real and true, what the Glass City calls existential density, can be heavy enough to tear the sky, and where those who sense higher dimensions experience them as resonance, longing, or awe.
As Adae explores a multiverse, desperate for something to answer back, a lover of rainstorms and turbulence negotiates herself into existence. A relentless traveler searches for the soul of her dead fiancé. A queen leverages the argument she once refused. A forgotten oracle sings to Saturn.
Serenade to Saturn is a novel about yearning as a chosen instrument of witness, about bleeding to enshrine sovereignty over form into a law of physics, and about a universe that broke itself open for justice on its knees.
For readers of N. K. Jemisin’s exploratory craft, Ursula K. Le Guin’s anthropological imagination, V. E. Schwab’s architecturally precise settings, Toni Morrison’s grief as cosmology, Octavia Butler’s description of body as philosophical terrain, and Susanna Clarke’s structural strangeness.
Advance Praise
"Philosophical and poetic, Serenade to Saturn is a daring speculative novel about ethics and the sovereignty of the body. [...] Its fluidity of expression bends literary and scientific rules. The same inventiveness extends to the chapter titles, which hint at underlying meanings, deconstruct dualisms, and highlight the liminal spaces between worlds and dimensions within the story. [...] Still, in reaching across multiple dimensions and universes, the novel assumes a breathtaking scope, with its fundamental debate on the sovereignty of the body feeling as based in reality as the Glass City is in fantasy."

I have had to spend a little time thinking about this book. This is not at all an easy read. It is a philosophical/sci-fi/mathy/logical/theorizing kind book. It is the type of book that requires thinking about what you just read…a lot. And reading those things over again. Sticking post-its in pages you want to revisit.
Anahita Nisa Sultana is by no means the writer of fluff books. This has meat and depth galore. There were chapters I fell into easily and there were chapters I struggled with because sometimes I felt as though I was back in algebra class and I am by no means a numbers person. Yet these things did not turn me away from reading the book.
If you love science fiction that theorizes and multiverses that seem set in any philosophy class you ever took. You will love this book. If you are looking for a cozy read this isn’t it.
It isn’t being released until March of 27. I have already preordered a copy. Did I love this read? I am almost four stars on my review of it but I really need a physical copy. I highly recommend this book.
I thank Dream Brave for the ebook I obtained through NetGalley and the opportunity for an early read. Opinions are mine.
