Description

The world is full of myths and legends. Magic. Monstrous creatures. The right dosage of depression meds. A summer day in New York where the air conditioning works in every subway car.

Chloe Porter moves to the city for the first time to figure things out, like many 20-somethings, with a simple copywriting job, but their new, massive tech company starts pulling them deeper into a secret world of arcane science and politics. Every step they takes is another slip deeper into a side of the city that might be destiny or might eat them alive.

The Night Awaits Us All is the first in a series about arcanists figuring out how to do their jobs, find a place to call home, and maybe save the world. Discover a different side of New York alongside Chloe and their growing circle of coworkers-turned-friends.

"ACERRIMA PROXIMORUM ODIA - The hatred of those closest to us is the most bitter"

Chloe Porter is a delightful, non-binary, American, copywriting Bob Howard. This gave me Laundry Files vibes in the absolute best way. Art is realistically distant and gruff without being annoyingly so, and the world is fascinating and really makes you buy in.

I initially worried that the book was significantly split POV, as the first few chapters are from various different characters, but after that it's all Chloe, interspersed with in-world non-fiction extracts. Chloe's family are integral to understanding who Chloe is and how they got to where they were, but some readers may find them triggering.

Difficult content is dealt with well, and I look forwards to the next book in this series.

The Night Awaits Us All was such a fun surprise! I loved the combination of modern New York, magic, monsters, secret societies, and the everyday struggles of trying to figure out where you belong.

Chloe was an easy character to root for, especially as they find themselves pulled deeper and deeper into a world they never knew existed. I really enjoyed watching their relationships develop and seeing the growing group of coworkers slowly become something more like a found family.

What worked especially well for me was the balance between the fantastical elements and the very real, messy parts of being a young adult trying to navigate work, relationships, mental health, identity, and finding your place in the world. The humor also kept the story from becoming too heavy, and there were plenty of moments that made me smile.

The New York setting gives the magic a really fun backdrop, and I enjoyed discovering this hidden supernatural side of the city alongside Chloe. There is definitely a sense that this is only the beginning, and I'm curious to see where the series goes from here.

A charming, quirky, LGBTQ+ urban fantasy with magic, monsters, friendship, and plenty of room for this world to grow.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the advanced copy.
