Thank you for the opportunity to read this work early. Beautifully written book. The cover and title drew me in initially but once I started reading, I could not put it down. I loved all of the different POVs from all of the crewmembers and did not feel confused at all jumping from character to the other. I look forward to reading the next installment.
Thank you to Net Galley and L.A. Waves for an ALC in exchange for a review.
If you love pirate adventures, you will easily love this book. The crew of the Sirius is easy to love and easy to read about. The story is written in multiple POVs of the crew, but it is always easy to tell whose POV we are on. This is a very easy read - let Captain Whitelock and his crew take you on this adventure. I cannot wait for book 2.
*Partial spoilers ahead*
Laying unconscious on a boat in the middle of the sea was not what Rhein expected when fleeing the Keelika prison, but neither was waking up on a pirate ship and joining the crew.
Through perilous adventure, we slowly learn the background of each crew member. With Rhein being a recent addition and by complete accident, there are crew members who are weary of her being aboard. Rhein may mess up a few times, but is granted one more chance - as long as she risks her life to help the Captain find his treasure.

Okay this was fun! I’ve been needing more pirate books and this totally scratched that itch. Such an easily lovable group of characters, an addictive writing style that’s action packed, humorous, and yet has an emotional pull.
I would put this book in the area of pirating that is more… unserious? (I don’t know the best way to describe it). Think One Piece type of humor and dynamics with the crew, yet there is still a lot of serious topics, a lot of action, angst, etc. And just like One Piece being a whole commentary on government and politics, and etc, this book had that as well! So Tales of the Sirius is in no way shallow as you break through the first few layers of the world building and meeting the cast through different POVs.
The general prose was unique but worked well as this book was filled with adventure. It was straight forward, not a lot of purple prose or extended descriptions, but that added to the charm I think. I don’t know what was in this because when I first picked it up, I somehow got through 100 pages without even realizing it. It flows well once you get used to the cadence, and there’s SO much going on, which really helped this book’s tone stand out. It’s like… there’s no down time and you get thrown in with the characters and their flaws and strengths, and can’t help but see them as one big pirate crew (family?).
The crew of the Sirius seem a mess until they’re in action and it’s like okay… yup, they are in fact pirates, but pirates that hold themselves to a code. Something about it felt so quintessentially what you expect from One Piece crews and Jack Sparrow.
I love how it leaned in to popular references/tropes involving pirate archetypes. I wouldn’t say I’d label this book as comedy because there’s a lot of serious content, but it’s not an adult book that is going to grind you down per say. There’s purposeful humor in the embellished ways characters act that just add to the charm.
One big thing I really loved and applaud the author on is how obvious the love/research that went into this book. I mean, I don’t know much about boats, but the characters were ON IT. A lot of terms thrown around and actions to further back up how realistic it seemed. And the descriptions for the settings were well done and easy to feel transported to.
I actually really liked the main girl, Rhein, to me she was the perfect example of super book smart and capable but… seemingly lacking in common sense… until you find out what about her past she’s running from. (Though some of her decision making skills really frustrated me. At the end I just wanted to shake sense into her!!) For the other characters- I loved just how much more than meets the eye there is to all members of the crew, and how unique each one is. (While Rhein is the primary POV, there are moments where we get POVs from most of the other crew members).
Anyways …. I need more pirate books and couldn’t help but fall in love with these characters and the addictive plotting, excited for the next book! (And loved all the little drawings throughout, kudos to the illustrator)
4.25 STARS - Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the eARC of this book!
This was suchhh a fun read!! After being found in the middle of the ocean, Rhein is rescued and brought on board a pirate ship. With a unique crew and humorous banter, the adventure begins.
The cover and title is initially what caught my eye and I’ve been back in my pirate era so I couldn’t wait to give this a try. This book totally had me hooked; it was action packed from beginning to end and I found myself breezing through it. The story was so engaging and each of the characters were so distinct, I absolutely loved the crews’ dynamic.
The world felt so alive and it made this such an easy read. The changing POVs and fun storytelling made the entire experience feel almost cinematic! You can see the time and passion that went into the making of this world through all the details (and even with the extra content on the author’s website).
Rhein is a complicated character who’s been through a lot, and her and the crews’ stories/development were some of the strongest parts of this book. That being said, Rhein is imperfect and I wanted to reach through my kindle and shake her whenever we would get a glimpse into her decision making. Also, that ending?! I can’t wait to see where the rest of this series goes!

I had a really fun time reading this. I haven't read many pirate books, just getting my feet wet in them so to speak, but this one was fun but had alot of series elements too. I loved how well the crew worked together and the main character although she went thru alot she was still frustrating st times which made her a complex character and I love complex characters lol. I thought this was well written with amazing characters and the cover of this book is stunning!!! Im a cover buyer and never read about a book and the cover was what drew ke to this book. I highly recommend
