Markan has spent years believing the Ember Crucible saved him.

After fleeing Veyl as a boy, he found purpose among the militant knights of Kharak-Vur, where fire purifies, pain is sacred, and scars prove strength. Newly branded as a full knight, Markan finally believes he belongs.

The Crucible marches to its aid, and Markan welcomes the chance to return to the city that ruined his childhood as the warrior who will save it. But on the road, encounters with rival orders, and Senna, an alchemist who questions everything he has been taught begin to fracture his certainty.

When Markan discovers his estranged mother still lives in Veyl, the war becomes personal.

And when the siege is broken, the Crucible reveals its true purpose: not to save the city, but to erase it.
