Description

Valé Consequence doesn't believe in love—only code.

The seventeen-year-old hacker-for-hire breaks into people's realities for a price, certain that the world is just a simulation and emotions nothing more than manipulations of the system. So when she starts having real feelings for her latest mark, Odysseus Sykes, she takes it as more proof—no simulation glitch has ever felt this real, which means it can't be real at all.

Then Odysseus is murdered.

And Valé is blamed.

Hunted by police and betrayed by her powerful client, the mysterious DeathDealer, Valé has only one way to clear her name: hack the simulation and rewrite what happened.

Her best friend Charlie—a spirit medium who doesn't believe in simulations—is risking everything to help, hiding feelings for Valé that Valé refuses to see.

But breaking reality isn't easy, and DeathDealer is always one step ahead. Valé isn't the only one trying to rewrite the rules.

In a world built on code, love might be the most powerful glitch of all.

Valé Consequence doesn't believe in love—only code.

The seventeen-year-old hacker-for-hire breaks into people's realities for a price, certain that the world is just a simulation and...

Love and Other Simulations has an incredibly intelligent sci-fi premise, with a fascinating, complex, and well-built world populated by equally fascinating characters. Valé’s emotional and intellectual contradictions are particularly engrossing. She dismisses love while desperately longing for it, and seeks proof regarding her reality in the hope that her emotional pain will somehow become meaningless. Her struggle to reconcile logic with feelings is one of the most compelling aspects of the story along with her relationship with her father and best friend.

i NEED to see this book being adapted into an animated movie!!

i'm not a big YA Contemporary fan, and so, in the beginning, while i was still trying to figure out what the book was trying to do, i wasn't sure if it would work for me. however, i'm very pleased to announce that it very much did!

Love and Other Simulations is a crazy, heartfelt, Matrix inspired coming of age story. i'm putting a lot of emphasis on "crazy". as long as you learn how to suspend your disbelief (which is why this would work so well as an animated movie!) you're in for an action-packed, HILARIOUS ride. it's one of the most entertaining and funny books i've read in a while (i giggled out loud while reading, which doesn't happen very often). i was scared that when the tonal change eventually happened (which it does, around the middle of the book), it wouldn't be able to balance the silly tone with the seriousness needed to convey the moral and coming of age side of it. fortunately, it handled those aspects very well! it's a story full of heart, lovable characters, and a romance subplot i really liked (love is SO REAL!!!)

i'd definitely recommend this book to upper teens (i think my 16 year old self might have loved this one more than i already did!) but also anyone who's in for a Matrix inspired, funny coming of age story with great pacing, that will leave you wanting to read it in a single afternoon.

Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!
