Description

Flight of the Medusa blends the meticulous realism of The Martian with the sweeping scope of Dune, an epic hard-sci-fi adventure with no faster-than-light engines, no hibernation, and no generational ships.

When the Kremkellic shoot thirteen-year-old Thristle, and she dies in Marsie's arms, Marsie vows to protect the refugee children at any cost. Now captain of a near-light-speed starship fleeing genocide, she must cross forty-two light-years to a human colony that stopped transmitting decades ago with a saboteur aboard, a pursuing fleet behind, and a secret that could destroy her daughter.

At Sarpedon, Rebel, a two-inch, donut-shaped alien, searches the ashes of her home for her surviving child. Her people communicate in sparkling pictures danced across thousands of limbs, think a hundred times faster than humans, and have made a catastrophic mistake: they don't realize the enormous, nearly motionless structures that descended from the sky are living creatures.

When Medusa reaches Sarpedon, refugees, colonists, and aliens separated by decades of silence, deception, and dangerous misunderstandings must find one another and discover the truth.

Marketing Plan

Flight of the Medusa will be supported by a broad prepublication and launch campaign targeting hard-science-fiction readers, reviewers, librarians, and science/space audiences. Advance review copies are being distributed through NetGalley and BookSirens, with additional outreach to science-fiction reviewers, bloggers, BookTubers, podcasters, and influencers.

Author Jeffrey Freedman will promote the novel through his website, mailing list, Goodreads author page, Facebook, X, and his Sci-NoFi YouTube channel, which focuses on the science and engineering of interstellar travel. Planned video content will explore concepts featured in the novel, including near-light-speed travel, interstellar hazards, propulsion, and first contact.

Freedman’s previous novel, The Spark Anomaly, reached #1 on Amazon’s Free Science Fiction & Fantasy chart and #6 among all free Kindle books. A professional review from Kirkus Reviews is also planned for Flight of the Medusa. Publication is scheduled for January 1, 2027.
