Description

Europe is at war, and for Thomas Ballantine the conflict offers something he has never possessed: a way into a world that was never meant to admit him.

A young Scotsman of modest origins, Ballantine is intelligent, ambitious, and acutely conscious of the barriers of class. When war draws him into Britain's clandestine struggle against Nazi Germany, he sees more than an opportunity to serve his country. The secret war may also provide the advancement, recognition, and social standing that birth has denied him.

But Ballantine enters this world as an amateur. To survive, he must learn deception, secrecy, and the difficult art of deciding whom to trust. Courage alone is insufficient. Clandestine warfare demands compromise, and each lesson makes him more capable while moving him further from the young outsider who first entered the service.

His struggle is on two fronts. Against Britain's enemies, Ballantine must learn the dangerous trade of clandestine warfare. Within Britain's own military and intelligence establishment, he must navigate a society shaped by privilege, connections, accent, education, and unwritten codes of behavior.

Set against the historical landscape of wartime Britain and Europe, The Amateur at Arms combines fictional characters and operations with historical figures, institutions, events, and the realities of the Second World War.

It is the beginning of Ballantine's passage: outsider to insider, amateur to professional—and ultimately, amateur to gentleman.
