Description

Jake Tatro wants back on the run that nearly killed him. Mae Gokey is the only one who can tell him no.

He raced downhill for a living. Three years ago his knee came apart on that run at thirty miles an hour. Mae brought him down his family's mountain on a rescue sled, talking the whole way so he wouldn't be alone. He left, and Sumner Notch, Vermont, hasn't seen him since.

Now the mountain is going under. The bank wants its money by the end of March. The only thing that would bring a paying crowd up that road is Jake Tatro racing again. So Mae offers to film his comeback and put it online, one episode a week, all winter. The last film she made was at seventeen, about this same mountain dying. It got her laughed at for a year.

She sets one rule. He doesn't go near that run unless she's standing on it. She's been the one who decides what's safe up there for eleven years, and she is not scraping him out of the trees a second time.

Jake sets one too, and he makes her say it twice. The mornings he falls don't go in the film. Not to save the mountain, not for anything.

The episodes go out. Strangers start driving up the notch road. Jake's phone starts ringing with people who want him back out there. He's started counting the mornings he gets with her on that hill. And somewhere in there, he stops talking to the camera and starts talking to her.

The better she makes him look, the sooner he's gone. And by March, one of those promises has to break.

The Way You Come Home is a fade to black small-town romance on a dying Vermont ski mountain, full of longing, slow burn and real heartbreak. Best friend's brother, hometown golden boy, forced proximity at dawn, and found family.
