Description

A truly groundbreaking exploration of the lessons learned from the basketball GOAT, Michael Jordan, from those who competed with and against him

REFLECTIONS ON MICHAEL JORDAN—the true GOAT of men’s basketball—often center around his six championships with the Chicago Bulls. There has been remarkably little in-depth coverage of his two years with the Washington Wizards at the tail end of his NBA career. Lessons from Michael Jordan is a fascinating exploration of this surprisingly fertile, influential, and largely ignored period in MJ’s life.

This volume is a conversation—a collection of personal reflections, raw insights, and lived moments shared by the people who actually played alongside Michael Jordan, learned from him, competed against him, and saw him up close during this time in his career. Lessons from Michael Jordan includes twenty-three interviews (an homage to the #23 on MJ’s jersey) conducted by Etan Thomas, with Patrick Ewing, Charles Oakley, Jerry Stackhouse, Phil Chenier, Kwame Brown, Jahidi White, Chamique Holdsclaw, Popeye Jones, Christian Laettner, Tyronn Lue, Wes Unseld Jr., and more.

Whether a reader is drawn to a specific voice or a theme (leadership, legacy, work ethic, media pressure, etc.), they will find a great deal to hold on to. This is a book you keep close, not just read once and shelve; it is designed so readers can pick it up, drop into any section, and walk away with something powerful.

Lessons from Michael Jordan reads like a locker room conversation turned life lesson. The tone stays raw but reflective. Each contributor brings their truth, and Etan Thomas steps in as a guide. It’s for the student who needs a shot of belief, the athlete grinding in silence, the young person wondering if they’re seen or understood—or anyone interested in learning life and basketball lessons from the greatest player to ever grace the hardwood.

Advance Praise

"This book presents many insights into the real Michael Jordan. Many readers will be surprised by what his teammates have to say about him, because it provides such a stark contrast with what they’ve previously heard. This is an in-depth look at the totality of MJ, and there’s a lot more than meets the eye." -Charles Oakley, from the foreword

"I’m glad MJ gave you the blessing to do this . . . so I’m really only doing this interview because I trust you. But for me, my perspective was a little different than everyone else’s because of the position I was in. People saw it as me being a hater, but it wasn’t that. I have all the respect for MJ in the world. He was my idol growing up just like he was everyone else’s at that time." -Jerry Stackhouse, to Etan Thomas

"People view MJ as arrogant and cocky, but we played with him—he really went out of his way to be one of the guys with us. Now, I can’t speak for when he was with the Bulls, but he didn’t treat us like we were less than, even though . . . we were." -Christian Laettner

"MJ would have these peaceful, serene workouts where he would be in the gym by himself, or with Tim Grover rebounding for him, and just shooting. He would have his big ole headphones on and be listening to some slow music or smooth jazz or something, and just shooting or going through offensive moves. And he would do that for hours. Like he would retreat there, clear his mind, and that would be his therapy. That’s how he would get through the tough times . . . Overall I learned a lot from MJ, and I think it’s great how you are using that as an inspirational story." -Kwame Brown

"Thomas's interviews demand careful reading by all who want to expose racism, hold police accountable, and create an American society that practices social justice." -Library Journal, on Police Brutality and White Supremacy

"In We Matter, Thomas strives to show the influence professional athletes can have when they join the conversation on race, politics and civil rights. Thomas conducted fifty interviews, which included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell, Laila Ali, Michael Bennett, and Eric Reid, among many other athletes, as well as journalists, television personalities, and family members of unarmed black men who were shot and killed." -Washington Post, on We Matter

"The honest conversations, published in transcript form and often accompanied by black-and-white photos, serve as a primer on recent police violence cases, a history lesson on the first athletes who stood up for racial justice, an examination of the experience of being young and black in the United States, and an insightful look at how it feels to lose a loved one to tragedy, from contributors such as Jemele Hill, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Carmelo Anthony . . . An important read, executed uniquely." -School Library Journal, starred review of We Matter
