Too Deep for Tears

This sad, but at the same time uplifting, memoir recounts the unexpected death of a first child, born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. It reveals medical incompetence and the red tape and bureaucracy faced by the parents when they attempted to obtain information on a mismanaged pregnancy and failure in maternity services. It also confronts the parents’ attitude to disability; and how they came to terms with removing their son from life support.

This book tells of the parents’ encounter with the first female neurosurgeon to qualify in the UK, who inspired the mother to write this book to raise awareness of the disability and its prevention.

The narrative is a distressing journey through grief, and reveals the implications for all involved: parents, family and medical staff. Through it runs a theme; the strength of a mother’s love for a child, despite chaos and death.
