Who wouldn't want too live in small town America next to a nice refreshing woods. That is until odd things start happening. Children disappearing, people killing their pets, adults doing strange and horrible things. And that's just for starters. The lives of the people rest in the hands if an odd trio. Jay, an alcoholic, high school teacher who has lost his job. Tim a teenage kid just trying to fit in at another school another town. He seems to attract bullies that take enjoyment out of tormenting him. Last, there is Sarah, a sweet grade school little girl that doesn't fit in. She is also bullied and called names and she is shy so she doesn't have any friends. An odd trio, but they are the ones chosen to save the town from the grasp of an ancient evil that has been around for hundreds of years. A very well written book. It has a lot of excitement, entertainment, nail-biting horror!! You'll find yourself unable to put it down.

Wow! What a ride! This book is just brilliant, from beginning to end the pace never lets up

The Characters were well written and believable, from the Alcoholic Jay, to Tim, the teenager with a loud mouth who doesn’t fit in.

This is a horror story in the true sense of the word and you are never sure who will turn out to be controlled by the demon!

This book as so gripping that I read it in less than 8 hours, I just could not put it down. I needed to get to the end to find out if and how they could defeat the creature.

At the end of the book, my heart was racing and the relief at the end was so real that I had tears in my eyes.

One of the best horror books I have read.

I found this a really enjoyable horror novel. An evil presence that has been dormant for 300 years is stirring, and that means trouble. The ideas were interesting and original, there was a great buildup and sense of dread as the plot was revealed. I also enjoyed the writing style- the language made the scenes and imagery come alive, and I felt transported into each spooky setting.

The characters were well written as well- not the usual suspects either. We have three misfits, an ostracized child, an awkward teen, and a disgraced former math teacher who must summon the courage to face the evil that is sweeping through their town. Each character grows as the book progresses in believable ways, and the evil entity pursues them in some really creepy and inventive ways as it grows it power.

The ending was satisfying, and many loose ends were tied up. Some minor questions were left unanswered, to my dismay, but I would recommend this as a good horror story. It had nice pacing, and I never skimmed or felt bored, so I'm giving it a rare 5 stars.

Rating 4.5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book from the beginning and didn't want to stop reading. This is a interesting ride. It takes place in present time but has an ancient creature lurking around causing lots of havoc. The main characters are flawed in their own ways, especially Jay but how the story plays out is what I enjoyed. Caignano did a great job in developing the plot and it kept my attention.

Those that enjoy the genre of paranormal-creature thriller/horror might like this.

This is my first book by Derik Cavignano, but will not be my last. It took me a few chapters to get hooked, and then I had a hard time putting down my kindle, because I need to see where it would lead. The 3 main characters are very different, but all share the same mission, one they were chosen for, to save their town from destruction.

You have a drunk and 2 school aged children who are thrown into a world of despair, evil, and destruction, but they are the only hope to save the community from what lurks in the shadows.

This is a perfect read for those who like sci-fi, with twists and turns enough to keep you on edge.

Colony of the Lost brought together three unlikely people chosen by Samuel, a ghost, as the "saviors" for the town of Glenwood, where children were disappearing at an alarming rate. Jay was a drunk, Tim, a much picked on teenager new to the area, and little Sarah, whose only friends were imaginary. Eventually, not just children were taken-whole search parties disappeared in a blink of an eye. Although Native Americans in the area were aware of the identity of the evil, they were hesitant to divulge the information. And who would believe in a demon from another world?

This was a new to me author. I have followed him on Amazon now. A brilliant read. A little Stephen King like, which is good. Reminded me a bit of It and I adore that book. I love horror genre so this was a good fit for me.

I highly recommend this author. And I would tell all lovers of horror to buy this. You won't regret it.

I couldn’t put down this book. Cavignano does an excellent job fleshing out the characters: Jay, an alcoholic, Tim, a sarcastic teen, and Sarah, a little girl with an imaginary friend. If you want a good thriller/horror novel, I recommend Colony of the Lost.

This book earned it's rating. As children up and vanish, three people have a vision. They are told they must stop the evil that is happening. A tall order in this case.

Tim, the new kid, Jay an alcoholic former teacher, and sweet nice year old Sarah who understands her own cat have to save their town, or maybe the world.

It's Sci-Fi. It's Spiritual/Paranormal, and it's got a great twist or two. It's a story about getting over your issues, overcoming weaknesses, getting rid of your "personal demons", deliverance and more. There are a few yucky things that I could have done without, but over all, a strong read.

My copy came from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review and nothing more.

This was an enthralling mix of terror and fantasy. Totally transfixing storyline, great characters and unbelievable situations. Non stop action from beginning to end and certainly had my pulse racing. Great read.

Great read. Vaguely reminiscent of Stephen King's It. A town terrorised by something unknown by all but a few.

Lots of varied characters that you care about compose the group that must ultimately solve the mystery and save the town and you won't want to put it down until you have finished.

Fans of horror movies are going to want to pick up this new tale from Derik Cavignano, which combines Stephen King with Scooby Doo, but in a good way.

The children of Glenwood, Mass. begin disappearing without a trace – no suspects, no clues, nothing. It’s eerily reminiscent of the original settlers of Glenwood, then called Freetown, who all disappeared, leaving not a shred of evidence about their fate behind. Meanwhile, a gang of misfits – an alcoholic teacher, a love struck teenager, and an outcast little girl – begin seeing something strange near the woods. They discover they need to work together to figure out how to stop who – or what – is destroying the town.

This book really succeeds because it takes you to a place that seems so normal, but is hiding something most abnormal. I think the setup is done well, slowly creating the mystery and atmosphere, then introducing the central horrific premise.

I’ve seen other reviews that criticize that it’s “unreal” or “far-fetched,” but that’s the beauty of horror novels: they can take you to a place where monsters do exist and where it’s too dangerous to turn out the lights. I definitely got chills when I was reading this book late at night, even realizing that it’s just fiction.

So, if you’re willing to forget reality for a little bit and experience some chills, I recommend this book. It’s got a great main cast of characters and a chilling premise.

Just make sure you lock your doors before you start reading.

Loved it!! A horrific read that I enjoyed. Along with the scary parts there are also some bits of humor thrown in. Definitely recommended for classic horror fans.

In Glenwood, Massachusetts, there is an evil destroying the residents. People are disappearing. A boy from the 1600s, Samuel, visits three people with a dire message. The three people are a teacher Jay, nine year old Sarah, and high school freshman Tim. Samuel tells them that only they can stop the evil. They will be facing a demonlike creature named Trell. Trell was responsible in the 1640s in killing a colony. As people die, Trell becomes stronger. Somehow Trell is able to have people do his bidding even when they don't want to..the three people must discover the lost colony's history besides his secrets. Will they be able to find them? If not, how will they destroy Trell?

The author has written well-developed characters. The premise is excellent. I enjoyed the novel. It is a solid horror novel. There is a paranormal aspect included which adds to the story. There is graphic violence which some readers may not want to read, but I don't think it was overdone.

I liked this book, what disappointed me a little was the ending. Cavignano's writing style is good but the story had a lot of loose ends and characters who were brought into the narrative and then forgotten about. The story also seemed to skip a bit here and there. This made the story disjointed.
There was also sex between the demon and the women in the book which I felt wasn't really necessary to the story.

Overall the book is an entertaining story mainly because of the characters and the ordeals they go through to save their town. But the background of the demon itself should have explored more I think it has added more to the tale.

Colony of the Lost
By: Derik Cavignano
5 out of 5 stars

The story Colony of the Lost by Derik Cavignano is a horror book that I loved reading. While reading I had a chill going up and down my spine and was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. It grabbed my attention from the very beginning. It had me reading far into the night as I just had to know how it all ends. I loved reading about Jay, Tim, and Sarah. This trio must work together in order to save the town of Glenwood against a force that is powerful and evil. The town’s children are disappearing at an alarming rate. What is happening to them? Will the unlikely trio be able to defeat the evil or will they become its victims as well? Read this book to find out. The story did a wonderful job of laying out the history of the town and land. The book is well-written with plenty of details. I felt like I was right there with the characters. There are also other characters that you are introduced to and I enjoyed reading about the part that they play in the story and how some of them interact with Jay, Tim, and Sarah. Jay is a man that at first, I had a hard time seeing as someone that could help and be a hero. Then as the story continued, I began to see him in a different light and I was rooting for him to succeed. I have always loved horror stories that include the supernatural and this story is a wonderful example of why. There are times when reading I would have to remind myself to breathe. Highly recommended book.
