Description
Project Hail Mary meets Stranger Things in this science fiction eco-thriller for YA readers.
In 2419, on the planet Gadolin, all eleven of Azimuth Navigation’s researchers have mysteriously gone missing.
Ana Varela, from 2035 São Paulo, is an aspiring forest ecologist with chronic teamwork allergies and the super-rare mutation that enables safe travel through spacetime portals. When Azimuth recruits Ana for a mission to help find their missing researchers, she agrees, but not because she cares about rescuing a handful of humans. Gadolin’s research program has the potential to save countless Earth species still threatened in 2419. Helping ensure this work continues . . . That’s the kind of difference she’d never dared to dream of making.
Ana questions her decision to help as her team learns the hard way that the forces at work on Gadolin are far more insidious than Azimuth could have ever anticipated. But the longer she stays, and the more perilous the situation becomes, the closer she grows to her five mission teammates: Thaddeus Shu from 2076 (the Dark Age) Seattle; Charlie May from 1906 England; and three neurodivergent 2419 contemporaries—Laosa Tuhami, Wen Litzi, and Thinhinane Haddad.
In the end, for these humans, Ana will risk everything. Even her heart.
A Note From the Publisher
Advance Praise
"Like the best climate fiction, this time-travel romp explores both the disaster of our ecological crisis and the opportunity to build a better world. A great read for any young person keen to imagine a future by and for everyone." —Andrew Dana Hudson, author of Absence and Our Shared Storm: A Novel of Five Climate Futures
"Spacetime portals, flesh-eating plants, found family—this story will sink its claws into you and not let go." —Ian Patterson, Colorado Book Award winning author of Transference
"The Ghosts of Gadolin is at once a juicy eco-thriller and an honest depiction of making community in a chaotic world." —Luka Dowell, host of the Solarpunk Now! podcast
"During the writing of this review, my neurodivergent child had just begun middle school in a gifted program, and in that tumultuous time I found so much comfort and hope in Ana’s journey. Like all great stories, Ghosts of Gadolin resonated so beautifully with our very real lives. A powerful, vulnerable, and utterly delightful novel that I look forward to returning to with my young adult." —Goodreads reviewer
"I was gripped from the very beginning and was in no way prepared for how this story ends." —StoryGraph reviewer
"This book gave me the warm fuzzies, but it also knew when to pack a punch or sprinkle in some eerie, gruesome horror. It covered the whole emotional spectrum for me! . . . I can't recommend this book highly enough to other fans of the YA sci-fi genre!" —Goodreads reviewer
"I especially love that, while the story does include a romantic relationship, there is even more attention given to friendships." —Goodreads reviewer
