Description
In 2019, Charlotte Ware, a research assistant at Fox News, is desperate to prove she has the chops to be a reporter when she stumbles onto the peculiar story of Shelton Stiles, an obscure rural Florida politician who managed to win a congressional seat while spending only $1,200.
Rather than finding Stiles supported by a bucolic campaign apparatus, Ware discovers that the aw-shucks Stiles is backed by a sophisticated electoral method called the "simple campaign," which has been honed to perfection by academics, and that this portable method has been successfully used by other congressional candidates since Stiles's initial victory. Ware reveals to the world the story of Shelton Stiles and his remarkably spare but effective method, seeing this as her road to journalistic stardom. The New York Times takes an interest in the story, keen to give it its particular spin, and assigns the cynical takedown artist Nathan Ritkoff. Ware and Ritkoff develop a wary journalistic relationship of mutual need, exposing the story of Shelton Stiles to the public, increasing Stiles's stature. In the run-up to the 2028 presidential election, Americans begin to embrace the idea that the simple campaign might just work to elect a president.
But those who require large volumes of money to maintain political power-lobbyists, donors, bundlers, consultants, party officials-are displeased, seeing their painstakingly crafted edifice threatened. They want to take Stiles and the academics down, so they meet in secret and develop a plan to destroy Stiles and discredit the simple campaign. This throws the 2028 presidential campaign into complete turmoil, leading to an outcome that couldn't have been imagined before Shelton Stiles arrived.
