Description

This Lent, let Christ’s Passion bring you closer to the spiritual freedom God has planned for you.

Christ came to set us free from whatever stands in the way of our relationship with him. Sin, wounds of the past, painful experiences, and suffering can hold us captive, keep us stuck on our spiritual journeys, and weigh us down.

In Set Free: A Guided Lent Journal for Prayer and Meditation, Fr. Dave Pivonka, TOR, guides you on a journey of discovering how to let God free you from the burdens you carry. Each week of Lent leads you to a deeper understanding of the freedom that Christ offers and draws you closer to the person God created you to be. With compassion, wisdom, and his characteristic zeal for God, Fr. Dave shares personal stories, observations, and insights, all infused with his warm sense of humor.

Journey through Lent as you encounter the freedom found in Christ:

  • Week of Ash Wednesday: Look Within—Begin with an honest examination of your heart and your relationship with God.
  • Week 1: Let Go—Recognize the ways sin, wounds, and past experiences keep you bound, and open yourself to the freedom Christ offers.
  • Week 2: Begin Again—Look back on how our first parents were created with total spiritual freedom, how it was lost through sin, and how God has always planned to bring us back into freedom.
  • Week 3: Reach for the Father—Reflect on what it means that God is Father, our broken perceptions of fatherhood, and how deeply God desires us to be his sons and daughters.
  • Week 4: Press On from Slavery to Freedom—Walk with the Israelites through the Exodus, a powerful image of your own journey toward spiritual freedom.
  • Week 5: Receive the Truth—Encounter Jesus’s ministry and teachings as he reveals the truth that sets us free.
  • Holy Week: Walk into the Light—Meditate on Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection as the definitive act of love that brings us out of darkness and into the light of freedom with him.

Each week follows a simple pattern:

  • Begin with a passage from scripture, a saint, or a church document that grounds your prayer in the richness of the Catholic tradition.
  • Read a thoughtful meditation that connects the day’s reading to the week’s theme.
  • Respond to guided journal prompts that help you prayerfully reflect on and apply God’s invitation to your own life.
  • Conclude with a prayer that leads naturally into your personal conversation with the Lord.

Whether you are longing for healing, seeking a deeper prayer life, or simply hoping to experience Lent in a more meaningful way, Set Free will help you prepare your heart for Easter by embracing the freedom Christ won through his Death and Resurrection.

Perfect for personal reflection or group study, Set Free includes companion videos featuring Fr. Dave and a downloadable small-group guide, found at avemariapress.com.

Advance Praise

“In a time when it’s easy to remain numb and distracted, we need voices that proclaim the Gospel with love and conviction, and Fr. Dave does just that. In Set Free, he draws on personal stories and pastoral wisdom to testify to the power of Jesus, who breaks us out of patterns of sin and bondage to live the freedom of sons and daughters of God. If you let these meditations open your heart to an encounter with Jesus this Lent, you will never be the same.”

Author, cohost of the Abiding Together podcast, and director of ministry formation and vision integration at Franciscan University of Steubenville

"'Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom’ (2 Cor 3:17). Fr. Dave Pivonka has walked closely with the Holy Spirit for many years and has helped numerous people step into greater spiritual freedom. In this Lenten study, he combines his fatherly compassion with his deep love for the scriptures and the Church, leading each us into greater freedom in Christ.”
Bob Schuchts

“Lent can often sneak up on us and find us unprepared—desiring to enter this season more deeply, but uncertain where to begin. In this Lenten journal, Fr. Dave offers personal stories, accessible meditations, and thoughtful reflection questions all aimed at drawing deeper into the journey of Lent the Lord is calling us to embrace. Bound by our wounds, our sin, and our weakness, we can begin to lose hope. Fr. Dave reminds us that Christ calls us to freedom and works in our lives to set us free to live as his beloved sons and daughters.”

“In Set Free, Fr. Dave invites us into a Lenten journey that is both tender and honest, moving from our places of captivity into the freedom Christ offers each of us. Fr. Dave writes as a true father and pastor, and this devotional carries the warmth and conviction of a man who believes, and has seen, that no one is beyond the reach of God’s love.”
Jake Khym
Dean of human and spiritual formation at Franciscan University of Steubenville and cohost of Restore the Glory Podcast

“So many of us, when Lent arrives each year, ask ourselves, ‘What will I do for Lent?’ This year, the answer is this journal! What a helpful resource Fr. Dave has given us in Set Free.”
Ralph Martin

"Christ offers us a great and beautiful freedom, and there is no one better than Fr. Dave to help us all to discover it. We have had the tremendous privilege at Hallow of getting to work with many incredible spiritual guides, but Fr. Dave is in a league of his own. What he does in this journal with these meditations is truly a gift to us all. Pick it up and give it a try. Let God do the rest."
