Description

An obituary ends the story. These poems refuse to. Winner of the Voyages in Verses Award, “Past Tense: Portraits and Poems on Suicides” gathers twenty-three lives, spanning more than a century, from 1902 to 2022 --- some world-famous, some known only to the few who loved them. Virginia Woolf, Kate Spade, Aaron Swartz, Jim Morrison, and Diane Arbus appear alongside figures far less documented: two Saudi refugees afraid to return home, a physician who preyed on his patients, a hacktivist facing decades in prison, the poet's cousin.
Each poem is written in a form chosen to match its subject --- not decoration, but architecture. A cento built from Vachel Lindsay's own lines. An erasure that lets Virginia Woolf's farewell letter point toward a second, hidden meaning. A poem composed in computer code for a programmer. A dynamic range of forms - arrow-shot elixirs in words - explores the shock of suicide and reflects the elusive nature of mental illness, sometimes by borrowing confessions from the very lives the collection honors.

"Suicide leaves behind heartbreak, unanswered questions, and far too much silence. LindaAnn LoSchiavo’s Past Tense: Portraits and Poems of Suicides honors lives lost while encouraging reflection and conversation about mental health and suicide prevention. I hope this book helps reduce stigma, inspires empathy, and reminds readers that help is available and that every life has value."

"Some books ask to be read, yet this one asks to be remembered. LindaAnn LoSchiavo gives voice to lives too often reduced to headlines, reminding us that every suicide leaves behind a story, a family, and unanswered questions. Compassionate, courageous, and deeply human. Highly recommended."
            — Rachel Thompson, author, the acclaimed Broken Series, geni.us/BrokenPeople

"LoSchiavo creatively enters the world of individuals who make this fateful choice through poetry that embraces and explores each of these individuals’ cultures, personal stories, and time periods. Through a variety of formal verse styles, she sensitively and successfully weaves historical fact with convincing recreations of personalized truth."
― Sarah Merrit Ryan, "My Soul to Keep: Faith in the Midst of Suffering Leads to Deliverance and Praise"
