Description

Charles Haddon Spurgeon Revisited: A Dramatic Biography gives a private and exciting insight into the Prince of Preachers’ life.

While some Spurgeon biographies of similar scope are just factual, this one paints the excitement of Spurgeon’s life in full colour. It is written in a vivid style, with plenty of action and interaction, similar to David Malcolm Bennett’s From Ashes to Glory and William Booth and his Salvation Army.

The biography covers Spurgeon’s rapid rise to fame, the horror of the Surrey Gardens tragedy, his romance, his struggles, his controversies and how he impacted his generation as well as our own age. In this biography, both the man and his ministry are captured.

This was an excellent short biography. It didn’t bog down in endless details or quotations. But it included enough of both to be a very good introduction to a great man of God. Bennett was also very fair. He obviously respects Spurgeon greatly and yet he still includes a fair amount of the criticism he received in his day.
It’s not a doctrinal statement. It’s just the barest of overviews of Spurgeon’s life. You’ll get a good general idea of his beliefs, however. This is the best part. Bennett was true to Spurgeon’s greatest desire – to see people come to know Jesus Christ as Savior. He included a very thorough Gospel message not just once but throughout the book. To me, that makes or breaks a Christian biography and this one was wonderful.
As always, the more you get to know of great men you discover they had feet of clay. There were a few things I learned that were disappointing, but despite that I would recommend this book to anyone. It was well written. The subject was encouraging. The author was an apologist for Spurgeon, but it didn’t come off as overly protective of him.
If I were being extremely picky, the only thing I could think of as annoying would be the slight repetition of how great Spurgeon was and how great his ministry was. There were a couple of phrases about that that repeated several times, but that’s all I can think of. Oh – and my copy (free from NetGalley and Rhiza Press for a review) didn’t have any footnotes or bibliography. Bennett referenced many of the works Spurgeon wrote for or wrote and many that were critical of him, but there is no list of sources. I’m not sure if that’s just because of the format I received or not.

This is a fair dramatic biography of one of the greatest preachers, pastors of all times - Charles Spurgeon. This story has many references to Spurgeon's letters and speaches, it shows the good, the bad and the ugly, just like anyone's life is. As great as many people are, they are merely human, however, their work had started something great and impacted the world, and that commands respect.

The language of the book is easy and fun to read, it bring just enough theology to express Spurgeon's views and beliefs without being too overwhelming or boring. I did not know much about his life and this book is a great resource.
