Description

When I was one, they said I would walk and talk soon—and I did. When I was ten, they said I would be a champion rider—and I was. When I was seventeen, they said I would go to the Olympics. . . .

Jennifer Field’s Olympic dreams were crushed when the car she was driving slid into a tractor-trailer, at the age of 17. The traumatic brain injury left Jennifer unresponsive, and unrecognizable to those who knew her best.

She’ll never walk again. She’ll never talk. You must be realistic. Nothing the doctors said would keep Jennifer’s mother from doing everything she could to get her daughter back.

Learn how this mother-daughter team out-lasted the naysayers, finding alternative treatments and with their single-mindedness achieved a level of recovery deemed impossible by the experts.

Her pinpoint focus on the goal, and “Never Give Up” attitude is what made Jennifer a champion on the equestrian circuit, and it’s what has given her back her life. Across the country, Jennifer shares her inspirational story to corporate audiences, conferences, and other gatherings. She hopes this book will help others face their challenges head-on.

From Blue Ribbon to Code Blue... documents both her daily struggle to adapt and some of the hard realizations which come with newfound disability...

Few narratives can so clearly document this step-by-step healing process; but From Blue Ribbon to Code Blue is as precise in its approach and experiences as it is candid about the many hurdles that must be jumped, both alone and with the help of others, in such a recovery.

Readers of true-life, near-death experiences and stories of survival will relish the lessons and life-affirming experiences... her story (is) one of the top leaders in literature about the healing process: "Ironically, it’s human nature not to appreciate something until it’s gone, or, in my case, taken away. Simple things like breathing, eating, sleeping, walking, enjoying a cup of great coffee, or sharing laughter with friends and family—these are all fundamental things I’ve learned not to take for granted." Very highly recommended as a riveting read that, once begun, is hard to put down!

The book launches into the accident that put her in a coma. I had assumed it was a riding accident (I should have read the blurb!), but it was actually a car accident.

Then we jump back in time to when she starts riding. From a very young age she shows a huge focus and commitment, sacrificing friends in order to train. It's therefore not surprising that she put the same level of determination and perseverance into her recovery.

Leaping forward again, I like that she acknowledged that she was lucky to have the finances to spend years pursuing the many different treatments around the world. It's very interesting to see how they all contribute something different to her recovery. I was disappointed that horses didn't feature in the process, but sadly that was not something that worked for her.

The narration is excellent. The story fully includes the perspective of her mother, and is regularly supplemented by very interesting contributions from other people.

The positive tone and casual style is highly readable. Don't be put off by the cover if you are not a horsey person - this is not a horsey book - it's a story about what can be achieved with time and dedication (and money).
