Description

The first three Cassie Pengear Mysteries in one volume.

Killing at the Carnival- Cassie Pengear thought a visit to the carnival would be fun: see some shows, eat some sweets, help her landlady’s nephew decide if the cowboy was real or an actor. But then the cowboy shot the volunteer, and he didn’t get up. Now Cassie has a ten-year-old boy insisting the cowboy isn’t a killer and a landlady insisting she help solve the killing at the carnival.

Death at Dinner- Cassie Pengear did not want to spend her evening acting as a parlor maid even if the house was in Mayfair, but her landlady’s friend was desperate and it was only night. But then one of the guests collapsed at the table. Now poison is suspected and the cook is convinced she’s the main suspect and will be locked away if Cassie doesn't solve the death at dinner.

Stabbing Set with Sapphires- Cassie Pengear thought a job typing up inventory lists at a jewelry store would be fun. Until there was a kidnapping. And then a robbery. And then a murder. Now Cassie must figure out the connection between the events and hope it will lead her to the missing girl. approx.

In a Victorian England that almost existed, a steampunk London where tinkerers and clockwork devices exist alongside handsome cabs and corsets, murder is still solved by traditional observation and intuition. This is the London where American typist Cassandra Pengear finds herself stumbling over corpses and helping Scotland Yard detectives solve murders (although they inexplicably prefer to call it interfering).

I really enjoyed this bündle of three light mysteries. Cassie Pengear is a great protagonist who keeps on accidentally stumbling over corpses and getting stuck with solving the case. She either gets cajoled into helping solve the murder or simply too nosy to let it go. The mysteries are entertaining and the reader gets enough clues to solve the murder alongside Ms Pengear.

These stories were interesting to read and I learned some interesting things about Victorian England. Originally published in 2015, these three stories have Cassie helping her landlady with various projects that end up with a murder and Scotland Yard presence. Lots of Steampunk references. Killing at the Carnival was my favorite. There are 5 books in the series.

Book 1 -
The story is set in Victorian London in the Steampunk era. In this cozy mystery, Cassie Pengear visits the travelling carnival with her landlady, Mrs Albright, and her nephew Davy. In one of the side shows a trick goes wrong and a man is dead. Inspector Burrows investigates with the help of Cassie.
A nice quick read, with an enjoyable tale.

Book 2 -
Cassie is asked to be a maid for an evening by Mrs Albright, her landlady. A friend of Mrs Albright, a cook by the name of Mrs Alma Pomeroy, is in need of assistance at a dinner party held by her employers home, a Mr Edgar Carrollton.
Unfortunately one of the guests dies at the table.
Inspector Hamilton with the help of Cassie try and solve the case.
An interesting little mystery.

Book 3 -
Cassie is employed by Kleinman Jewellers to type the insurance forms of their stock. Unfortunately this mundane job leads to robbery, a kidnapping and finally murder. Can Inspector Wainwright solve the case with whatever information Cassie can find.
A nice little mystery.

These are three classic style mysteries featuring Cassie Pengear all bundled in one. While Cassie is very charming, she is also very nosy and makes a good amateur sleuth. There are no big surprises here when it comes to the mystery part but they are still enjoyable with interesting characters. I'm not sure if I would continue with this series since it feels like once you've read the first one, they are all very similar except for the setting of the murder. If you like simple whodunits then these fit the bill.

This was my first introduction to Miss Cassie Pengear, and I was pleased to have three of her books in a bundle for a proper introduction. Cassie is a typewriter, and as such types up police reports for Scotland Yard. by knowing the investigators involved, Cassie tags along to help out in the investigations, when her presence is welcome or not.
The author sets the scene of Victorian England very well, and the steampunk touches are a wonderful addition. The mysteries are well plotted and the pacing of the books is good. I enjoyed each one in the bundle, and the plots are original and well developed, with an adequate number of twists.
Miss Pengear is an independent working woman in Victorian England, a rare bird for the time, and I admired her spunk and her stick-to-it-ness. Her cast of supporting characters are interesting and we come to care for them in each book.
I think this is a fresh voice for the Cozy Genre, and I look forward to see more of Miss Cassie Pengear.

A set of cozy mysteries to curl up with - they are not going to tax your mind too heavily (a moderately close reader will probably figure out the murderer quickly) which is fine when you are in the mood to just float along in the world of the novel. Recommended for rainy days with tea and an occasional nap.

This trio of delightful cozy Victorian steampunk mysteries by L. A. Nisula could well be dubbed “An American Typist in Steampunk London.” The novels are on the short side, staying close to the story line, nicely paced and with a good balance between characters, most notably Cassie herself, her quirky landlady, and disapproving Inspector Burrows of Scotland Yard (and the other equally disapproving inspectors who are forced by circumstance and evidence to acknowledge Cassie’s superb detecting skills and keen deductive powers. The mysteries themselves are tidy but not dry or predictable affairs, occasionally including nifty steampunk technology (like mechanized “birds” that deliver messages to “aviaries” like a sort of flying postal service). Cassie earns her living typing (which involves lugging her heavy manual typewriter all over London) reports for Scotland Yard, monographs for Oxford dons, and occasionally other jobs that hurl her in the way of murder and mayhem. Her usual response is to seek out a tea shop for a cup of tea and an array of colorfully-named English pastries, necessarily for deep cogitation. Her sweet tooth (and the ready availability of such tea shops) is legendary. Each book in this bundle provides a different setting for the mystery: in Killing at the Carnival, Cassie and her landlady’s nephew visit a Wild West show, only to have the sharpshooter make a deadly mistake before their eyes; Death at Dinner sees Cassie pressed into service, helping her landlady’s friend, a cook in a big house, with a formal dinner that turns poisonous; in Stabbing Set with Sapphires Cassie takes a job typing up inventory for a jewelry store and encounters fake gemstones, kidnapping, burglary, and murder. Much fun ensues.
