Holly Webb’s Buttons, the Runaway Puppy (Pet Rescue Adventures) appeals to children of all ages who love animals. My 5-year-old grandson enjoyed having it read to him. While it is a chapter book there are just enough illustrations to keep interest and help to visualize the story. A child moving into chapter books reading would be able to handle this on their own. The words are not too difficult or the story extremely long.
Buttons, the Runaway Puppy has several twists so this is a more complex story than it first appears. I thought this would be a case of the original owner of Buttons being a villain in the book but was glad to see that was not the case at all. Still children can naturally predict, be surprised and relate to the characters especially Sophie. Plus, seeing the events from Buttons perspective adds to the charm of this well told story. When finished reading, we hoped this is only the first of many adventures for Buttons and Sophia to have.

This is a cute puppy story that young readers will love. Buttons is a chocolate labrador puppy that has a lot of energy. When her owner, Mr. Jenkins, becomes ill he can no longer take him for the long walks he needs. When he ends up in the hospital, Sophie and her brothers Tom and Michael take care of him. They take him for long walks and teach him basic commands. When Mr. Jenkins returns home he realized that it is not fair to Buttons to live with an old man who can not take him for walks and let him burn off his energy. A cute story with short chapters to appeal to young readers. A great book for a late primary/early junior class library.
