Description

Three headstrong young women are members of the elite in a small but wealthy New Jersey town. The arrival of a handsome, charming member of the English aristocracy rearranges their safe, predictable lives one summer in 1902.
Alice Hastings is an accomplished painter who wants to prove her artistic talents; however, her adoring widowed father has other plans. Francesca Dunbar may be of royal lineage and feels superior to her neighbors. She is the spoiled only child of a family whose secret could shake up the town gossips. Claire Armstrong loves her horses more than anything, but her father is intent on having at least one of his five daughters marry well.
Each young woman is at a crossroads in a world where women’s rights are still not a matter for discussion in their social circle. For Alice, Claire, and Francesca it means taking three different paths to finding happiness…and so much more.

Delphine was a beautiful young English girl who enchanted all who met her and men never forgot her. Delphine was born in Paris and brought to London by her British diplomat father in an attempt to forget the untimely death of her mother. Delphine was prepared to come out in society and find an acceptable husband. There was a lot to do like how to walk away from the king since she wasn’t allowed to turn her back to the king and also learning to do a very deep curtsy. Mrs Charles Fuelding was would sponsor Delphine. After Delphine was presented to the king she was ready for society and available to be married. Soon Delphine was invited to balls and parties and was provided with jewels and gowns from the Prince Of Wales and other gentlemen who found her fascinating and intelligent. Delphine became a professional beauty- P B- who became famous because of their beauty. Delphine became known for her simple elegant style. It was at one of the King’s parties that Delphine met Paul Dunbar an importer of fine oriental goods. Paul had been a friend and and hunting companion of the king for years. A PB had to be married to have an affair with the king . It was a long followed practice. Delphine married Paul and when she became pregnant. Paul decided to move to America. Paul didn’t like living the life of a kept man. Paul loved Delphine a lot. Paul and Delphine had a daughter named- Francesca. Delphine and her daughter were very close and shared everything including the gossip. Francesca’s mother had been loved by a king but Francesca had to keep that secret so Papa would not be embarrassed. The Dunbars were considered outsiders in Morristown N. J. having only one generation in Morristown. The Dunbars new mansion was called Belle Terre. William was twenty eight and was a rich man and talking about a trip to America.
I didn’t love this story and I didn’t hate it. I did learn some of the things some of the women had to learn to enter society to be able to marry. It also told you of Delphine and her marriage and why she married Paul and how things were in court. But i felt the story dragged which made t hard for me to stay interested and want to finish this even though I did.I also did enjoy learning of a time in America’s past. But the story just didn’t have that special something that makes a decent story great for me and a favorite. I did enjoy the ins and outs and the characters.
