Description
It's not every day that you get chased by a lion. But strange things happen when you lose your job. Instead of returning to the rat race, Alistair convinced his wife, Francine, that it was time to travel the world. His mother-in-law was not so impressed. She wanted Grandchildren, not postcards from faraway places. But they were in their late thirties and sensed it was now or never to take the trip of a lifetime. During their epic adventure they camped in the wilds of Africa, touched the snows of Kilimanjaro and volunteered in the jungles of South America. Along the way they met amazing characters, survived an underground blast in a Bolivian mine and hired a Peruvian donkey called Angus. A year later, they moved to Australia in search of a new life. As for losing your job and starting afresh in a new country. If you can outrun a lion, anything is possible!

Very amusing book. I loved hearing about their travels and learning some history and geography along the way. WOuld like to read more of his books.

I wanted to love a story about a (slightly) middle aged redundant factory worker turned backpacker, and this didn't disappoint me at all.
The fact that he has such a positive reaction to redundancy sets the tone for an upbeat, often hilarious, account of mishaps and adventures. I am convinced Alistair seeks out the most hopeless tour guides, and I have never heard of anyone attacked by a seal in a public toilet!
Several (but curiously not all) of the chapters have great quotes to introduce them - from classic cartoon characters such as Mr Benn and Paddington Bear to 1980's pop stars.
Make room on your shelf next to Bill Bryson - this a thoroughly enjoyable travel book.
