Quintessa Beaumont is tired of being beautiful, with the war on she wants to be useful. So she joins the WAVES in hopes of changing people's perception of her. But when she stumbles upon a plot to sell military secrets to the enemy, will the FBI take her seriously or see just another pretty face and empty head?

Daniel Avery puts his career first, on track for reaching his dream of becoming an admiral. He doesn't have time for rest or fun, if he's going to reach his goals. But when an assignment puts him under a officer who has a personal vendetta against him, he wonders if he will ever get to prove himself or if this assignment could derail his entire career.

Tess has grown a lot over the course of the last few books, she wants to be respected for her brains and sensibility. She is a good friend, and goes out of her way to make others feel welcomed. Tess is eager to serve her country no matter the challenge, and encourages her fellow WAVES. Tess is capable, intelligent and the perfect encourager.

Dan can't believe that a woman like Quintessa Beaumont has turned his head after a woman nearly ended his military career years ago. But Tess surpasses Dan's expectations, even cracking through his business only, no-nonsense exterior, encouraging him to take time for himself as well as work hard. Dan struggles to give control to God, in trusting him in rest as well as work. I admired his dedication to his job, integrity, and willingness to examine himself and do the right thing no matter what.

A fantastic read from beginning to end, I love how Ms. Sundin puts so much work into the details and research behind making these books come to life. I enjoyed learning more about warfare at sea, as well as seeing so many familiar faces from the previous books in the series crop up in this book. One of my very favorite things about about this book was Dan's journey of faith to relying on God to rest and trust Him rather than to take it all on his shoulders. Filled with action, mystery and intrigue, with strong, complex characters to cheer for the whole way through. I especially liked Tess's friend Nora. High recommend this entire series!

Wow! Sarah Sundin never fails to disappoint! Why did I wait so long to read this book?

What really drew me to this book was the beautiful book cover of course! I LOVE this book cover and when I saw it I knew that I had to read it.

The story was very moving and I love how Sarah Sundin interweaves history and drama into her novels. I also love how most of her books are interconnected but you can still read this book as a stand-alone as well.

I just love reading Sarah Sundin’s books and I can’t wait to read her next novel. I highly recommend this novel!

A beautiful girl who wants to be seen and recognized for more than just her beauty. A stern, hardworking man with a heart hidden less deep than he thinks it is.

I have mixed feelings about this book - while I still love it, I find it a bit less complex and a bit more preachy than the first two installments in the series.

I has been dying to read the story of Quintessa, the truly golden girl of this recognizable series. And she delivers here! A girl known for her beauty and charms, she wants to be seen as just more than that. And she manages, because her beauty lies inside of her, in her heart. Even a stern man as Dan finds himself to fall for the hope and light she so freely offers to everyone around her.

Unfortunately, Dan is no Mr Darcy, and his workaholic tendencies and burdened heart could use more grace. My complaint is about the way he is portrayed - as a man who needs some softening. Well, he does, but he also needs a portion of recognizing of his hard work (I am speaking here about the difficult responsibilities he was shouldering as a child, and the sheer miracle he is still a good and honourable person after living under such a burden). Dan needs to hear that he truly did some recognizable work, with God´s help. Sure, he has flaws, and some are serious, but the responsibilities for that are broader. I think a whole more true, heart-changing forgiveness should be offered here and to more players (like his father and mother).
I am also not a fan of silence when the unjust things are happening - speaking about his difficult boss here. I understand the idea of humility and leaving the revenge to the Lods´s hands, and I agree - yet I also thinks that the justice should be served also because of the activity of the Christians. The justice does not mean and is not equal to the revenge. So while I understand the reasoning here, I also think that the confrontation is more loving answer in some cases.

Having said all that, I think this book is a good book club material - because of all of the questions it gives.

And having said all that - I wholeheartedly recommend this series. The historical layers are very deep, the characters are very, very interesting and the overall feeling is like the one the golden era movies give - the glam, the charm, the depth, the meaning.

5 Stars!!!
I have adored this series since the very beginning of Through Waters Deep. So, I was very much looking forward to this third book! Quite honestly I really didn't like Quintessa very much in the two previous books and I did find myself feeling a tad skeptical that she would ever grow on me, I needn't have worried, in Sarah Sundin's masterful hands Tess became a fantastic heroine that I very much liked and was rooting for from the start of her story! It was great getting to know Dan, we have only seen him briefly in the first two books so it was wonderful to see him grow and become the amazing hero I knew he would be! It was awesome to see how Dan and Tess's personalities while very different were perfectly matched.
I loved When Tides Turn, though this is one series where I find it impossible to choose a favorite!
Once again I was blown away by the amazing historical details, (I've said it before and I'll say it again, in general World War Two is not my favorite historical time period to read about) I absolutely adore Sarah Sundin's books, I am always swept away by the fabulous details and I never feel like I'm reading the story but instead that I am living in the 1940's alongside the characters for a little while, which I love!
I loved the updates that we got on Jim and Mary, and Arch and Lillian, it did make me a little sad to have to say goodbye to the Avery family though!
I loved everything about this book and highly recommend it! I cannot wait to read more of Sarah Sundin's work in the future!

I enjoyed reading this series by Sarah Sundin. Her first two books (Through Waters Deep and Anchor in the Storm) provided such fun reading that I was looking forward to getting this third book. When Tides Turn was just as great as the first two. This book continued the fun story that was begun in the first book, Through Waters Deep, and finally told the story of the beautiful Quintessa Beaumont. From the start, the book pulled me in, and it was hard to put down. I loved the part of the story where Tess is trying to figure out who among Yvette Lafontaine’s group of French ex-patriates is possibly a spy. The added suspense of a traitor in their midst is great! This time in history was also interesting to read about since women were now able to join the military and help in their own way to fight for their country. The story helps you re-live an era that we can only read about. If you're looking for some fun reading, pick up this great series from Sarah Sundin!

Tess is the last roommate that hasn't found her place as World War II rages on in the Waves of Freedom series. Who will take her seriously when she is all drama and fashion? Lieutenant Dan Avery, one of the siblings, also in these novels desires to make admiral status his only goal. How will God bring them into His will and satisfy both their intentions? Read When Tides Turn and you will discover these answers along with intrigue, suspense, and maybe even romance.

When Tides Turn by Sarah Sundin is the third book in the “Waves of Freedom” series. I read this series out of order but every book made sense by itself. I enjoyed this series immensely because I could tell there was a lot of research put into each book, and each character was unique and had their own perspectives and stories to tell, even though they were all intertwined.
This book concludes the series with the story of Quintessa “Tess” Beaumont, a woman known for her beauty but who is tired of only being seen on surface level. In an effort to do something with her life and use her brains, she joins the WAVES. In addition to hoping to be known for her brains rather than beauty, she hopes to overcome her crush on her best friend’s brother, Dan Avery.
Dan is a serious, practical man whose stark, quiet nature is quire the contrast to Tess’s bubbly personality. The two clash repeatedly, but when their divisions of the Navy are assigned to work together, will they be able to get along and focus on tasks to help the fate of the second World War?
I’d be hard pressed to pick a favorite book in this series. Each has similar elements in that it is set in WWII and each book is about a different member of the Avery family and includes some element of mystery, but they are each unique as the characters overcome their own set of struggles and help out in the war effort. I’d highly recommend this series to lovers of historical, mystery, and romance novels.

When Tides Turn is a love story wrapped up in a mystery. Tess and Dan stayed in the military, which was a major part of their lives, but THE most important thing in their lives was their FAITH. Thee most important person in their life was not the D. O. D. but the GOD - AMEN? Dan did keep telling himself he had to focus on work but when you have feelings for someone your concentration isn't on work so right ya'll? There was a mystery with Tess and Yvette and the French group. It is a great Historical story, true to it's time Tess adds life to Dan's dull life and so do the kisses but most of all so does JESUS. I cannot wait to see the next one from Ms. Sundin because this book was amazing

When I first read Anchor in the Storm I was very excited to figure it out that it was part of a series. So when When the Tide Turns came out I jumped at the chance to read it. The cover isn't what I had in mind for the characters when I read about them, but as much as I'm a cover snob it doesn't really have anything to do with the book.

Tess is a great character. I love that she switches her name from Quintessa to Tess when she decides she wants to turn over a new leaf. I really enjoyed her peppy and friendly personality, her bravery and how she wanted to be seen for more than her outer appearance. She did take that a little far sometimes, but I can relate. Not the gorgeous part, but the part where when I've decided that this is how something is when someone doesn't behave the way I think they should, my feelings get hurt.

Honestly, Dan was not my favorite character. He was fine when he was with Tess, but most of the scenes without her I found to be a little boring and technical with Navy stuff. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for the technicalities but I found myself skipping and skimming while Dan was on the boat.

I think this was a fitting end to the Waves of Freedom series. A good clean war time romance that I would recommend.

When Tess Beaumont learns that the career goal she has been working toward for the last ten months is fruitless, she decides to change her course and make a difference in WWII by joining the new women’s program in the Navy called the WAVES. She hopes the distance and the rules against marrying a fellow Naval officer will help her forget her attraction to Lt. Dan Avery, but her hopes are in vain when he is ordered to become her commanding officer. However, Dan might be just what Tess needs to help solve the mystery of a potential spy that she has stumbled upon.

When Tides Turn is an intriguing historical fiction. It weaved in elements of both sweet romance and mystery and couples them with rich historical detail. Sparks flew between the two main characters from the very beginning, though they were understandably clueless to the other’s affection. The ability to hide their emotions is part of what makes them both great Naval officers. The rule against officers in the same military branch also complicated their relationship, but the problem was overcome by the end of the novel. The mystery was intriguing and kept me guessing the entire time, although, I confess, I never was very good at solving mysteries in novels. The historical detail was fascinating. Since the main characters were military officers, they were occasionally placed in the middle of WWII battles. Living those experiences through the eyes of the characters was thrilling, and the book rarely branched into confusing military or seafaring jargon. The growth of the characters as individuals and as Christians was obvious and natural and contributed beautifully to the plot and the romance.

I recommend When Tides Turn By Sarah Sundin to fans of WWII fiction, mystery, and romance. I hope you enjoy this novel as much as I did.

Sarah, you are my BFF for life (that may be a little redundant, but you get my meaning). Just sayin'.

Sarah Sundin writes WWII era romance and does it better than any other author I've read who also writes for this era. That being said, When Tides Turn is her newest offering in the genre and it is definitely up to her impeccable standards.

Quintessa Beaumont has been in love with Dan Avery since she met his sister, Lillian while they were growing up. Dan is a single-focused Navy man with pinpoint vision lasered in on his career. When Quintessa is overlooked for promotion at Filene's Department Store, she decides to join the WAVES and actually do something for the war effort. Dan is working to move his career along, but he has one fly in his ointment--an officer he once reported for conduct unbecoming.

Sarah has included a bit of espionage, spy-counter spy activity, murder, attempted murder, and top secret maneuverings. Then there is romance that has already bloomed and is coming to fruition. It's quite a rollicking reading.

Things I loved about this novel:

The war in the Atlantic against the German U-Boats
The destroyer escorts that played a minor role in the book, but a major roll in the war
The aircraft carriers that made a huge difference in the war
The accuracy of the war facts woven into the novel
Sarah develops her characters over a series of novels but that only adds to the attraction of her books.

This is a Five Star, Two Thumbs Up book, with a hot danish to have with your tea.

Another perfect story by Sara Sundin. Kept you guessing from page 1.

Posted on BN, Goodreads, and Amazon. I will also try to locate a couple more websites to post.
The amount of research that Sarah Sundin put into this book is amazing. When Tides Turn is very detailed with a lot of naval and Historical facts. I learned a lot about World War II that I had not previously known.
It was especially interesting the information she provided about the role WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) played in World War II. It was a great reminder how far women have come when the main character Kate had to deal with the discrimination and false assumptions made about her because she was a woman. And this came from not only men but also women. In fact, I loved the change in Kate as she realized her own potential outside of the parameters previously set for her.
Romance was also a part of When Tides Turn. However, it was a good balance. I am not a big romance fan and I loved the character development that first happened in the plot. When Tides turned had several twists and turns. It started out a little slow for me and contained more naval submarine detail than I could comprehend. So it really didn’t hold my interest. And while that isn’t my preference, I am sure that will make this a favorite of others. It is obvious that a lot of time and effort was taken to write When Tides Turn. The amount of effort with the details will cause me to check more books from this author. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

I have enjoyed the first two novels in this series and was excited to read more about Tess. She is determined to prove she is more than a pretty face and I admired her gumption and tenacity in this book. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and appreciated the depth the author invested into their personalities. The passion of the characters combined with the interesting detailed history makes for a fascinating read. I also liked the suspense and mystery interspersed in the story. Combined with hidden romance and true spiritual struggles, this novel is a great read. Recommended to all lovers of historical fiction!

Sarah Sundin does it again! When Tides Turn hits the trifecta with a beautifully-blended story of love, intrigue, and faith. Well-researched history, heart-warming characters, and a historical setting that pops to life make this novel impossible to set down.

Despite my immense love for Jim Avery (Through Waters Deep), I think his no-nonsense brother has taken his place as my favorite hero in the Waves of Freedom series. I don’t want to give anything away, but just wait until the scene in which Dan gives Tessa one of the sweetest gifts ever. I’m pretty sure I melted into a puddle right then and there.

As always, the characters are exquisitely developed as they face life and faith obstacles many of us can relate to. Sundin has a knack for understanding and addressing the human psyche. Though Tessa and I are night and day different, I could connect with her and found I, too, struggle with a lot of her fears and worries. It was a reminder that despite people’s differences; we deal with a lot of the same issues.

I strongly recommend When Tides Turn to anyone looking for a great historical romance with a hint of mystery. If you haven’t read the first two installments, I encourage you to start there, not because they are imperative to follow this book, but because the series is too good to miss.

There's a lot going on in this story other than a romance. As Tess fights for respect, she also works to solve the mystery involving her former roommate Yvette, who seems to have gotten mixed up in some type of spying. Tess just isn't sure which side she's on. Dan deals with a naval officer from his past who is determined to ruin his career. The themes are strong---self-esteem, ambition, forgiveness, and trusting in God's plan. And, as usual, the historical setting gives the reader the sense of being transported back in time.

It would have been easy to find Dan unlikeable. I'll admit, at first, I had my doubts about him. I've liked Quintessa in the previous two books and wanted to see her with someone who would value her. But after a while, I was won over, and by the end, I gave my approval.

Bottom line, Ms. Sundin has another hit on her hands!

I received this book from the publisher. My opinion is my own.

The books in this series can be read as stand-alone stories, but reading
them as a series means having the pleasure of catching up with familiar
characters.
I do like learning something - preferably about history - at the same time
as enjoying a good story. These books combine a history lesson, with a
mystery story, plus a romance.
There are lessons to be learnt, such as different personalities complementing
each other - thereby bringing different strengths to a team.
The characters have flaws, which they learn from & are able to change - this
makes them very likeable as they are 'real', rather than 'perfect'. They may
be tempted to take things into their own hands rather than wait for God's
timing, but ultimately make the right decision.
I appreciate having a quality author whom I can recommend, knowing I
can rely on her to not have 'crossed the bounds'.

I would like to start off this review by saying I discovered something about writing styles in relation to myself when I was having a conversation with a friend the other day. She said there are three main story telling styles. Character driven stories, plot driven stories, and theme driven stories. When she told me that I was able to identify why some books really stick with me and others leave me with more of a ‘meh’ reaction. My favorites are character driven stories, a close second being plot driven stories and I have a harder time really getting into theme driven stories. Okay that’s the introduction.

Sarah Sundin is an incredibly talented author whose specialty is theme driven stories set in the World War II time period. Her research and attention to detail is truly noteworthy and for that I admire her. She does also do a great job weaving a plot and I really like her characters. So this should honestly be a 5 star book and I think as far as quality and everything it truly is. For my personal enjoyment however I’m going to bump it down to 4 stars. As I said I really liked her characters, but I never felt them. There seemed to be certain elements of emotion lacking where she told what they were feeling instead of showing it. However since I’ve now made the discovery that I described before, it doesn’t bother me as much and I’m able to give this book the kind of review I want to. If you love the WWII time period and all the naval info and details etc. with a great story line to make it flow, I think you’ll really like this book!

I also liked how she portrayed the spiritual journey of the characters, especially Dan. Such an admirable hero, not because he’s perfect but because he’s teachable and surrendered to what the Lord shows him.

So as I said, a five star book, but for my own personal enjoyment I’m bumping it down to four stars.
