Nonfiction (Adult), History, Witchcraft

Mary was born in England with several of her siblings. Her father decided to move the family. To Boston. After a failed crop, he moved them to Connecticut. There, Mary met a midwife, also named Mary. She began working for a family to keep her out of trouble. She later married and has children.

This was difficult to read with old English style. It was extremely long and had a slow pace. The characters were developed, and it was written in the third person point of view as a historical text.

"My Enemy's Tears" is an interesting account of the early witch hunts taking place in New England during the 17th century. Reading about how easily neighbors and friends turned on each other if something bad happened to them was intriguing and somewhat frightening. Overall, I really liked this novel but the style of writing just didn't really suit my taste and I felt that there wasn't really enough insight into the different characters to make me empathize with their situation.

The title by new author Karen Vorbeck Williams shows a love of history and authenticity. The book My Enemy's Tears: The Witch of Norhampton is full of energy and stress as we are shown the life of a young girl torn from her beloved home in England during the 17th century and how she dealt with the religious fears haunting that time. It is not your typical historical fiction but blended with romance, religion, geography, friendship and fear. Definitely a read again book.
