I read this a long time ago, but I never posted a review. It really was a good book. I would definitely read more books by Jill Archer. When I have a link to a review I've written, I'll update this post.

Book Summary:

Noon Onyx is back! In this long-awaited fourth installment, Jill Archer returns readers to the dangerous world of Halja, where demons, angels, and humans coexist in an uneasy state of détente.

Maegester-in-Training Noon Onyx feels like she’s done it all – mastered fiery magic, become an adept fighter, learned the law, killed countless demons, and survived having her heart broken by both love and an arrow, but now she’ll face her greatest challenge yet…

Far to the north lies an outpost famous for its unrest – Rockthorn Gorge. The town’s patron has specifically requested Noon’s help. Her assignment? Help the neophyte demon lord build his fiefdom and keep what’s his. The problem? Lord Aristos – Noon’s new employer – is her erstwhile lover, Ari Carmine, the aforementioned heart breaker. And the number one thing he wants is her.

When Rockthorn Gorge’s viaduct is destroyed by Displodo, an enigmatic bomber, killing a dozen settlers and wounding scores more, Noon sets off early to aid in the search and rescue. Ari is listed among the missing and the suspects are legion. But Noon’s search is just the beginning. Her journey forces Noon to confront not only those she loves, but also enemies hell-bent on destroying them.

Book Review:

Noon Onyx is one character who never fails to disappoint. I totally found this book to be one of the best in the series so far. Noon has to deal with a new assignment. Plus not to mention Ari, requested that she be sent to this place. So this makes things much more interesting between the two of them as they were once romantically involved.

I love how that this book starts. We get to see some of Ari’s point of view and how he sees the world. Not to mention being a drakon makes things much more interesting as he sees things differently. This was interesting. Love the conversation between his adoptive mother Joy and him and how they are talking about Noon. I thought their perspectives were interesting. Joy warned him not to keep secrets and that was what broke them up. So of course things happen that are going to bring them back together.

The fact that Noon is sent to Rockthorn Gorge’s to help Ari deal with the problem of the dam, also there are a lot of new characters who want to stop the dam or have their own motivations for wanting the dam. You never really know who is on which side. I thought that the relationship between Noon and Ari was so much more intense than before. Also the fact that they have to deal with other individuals who are upset that they didn’t get the patronship, or the dam finished or not finished the dam.

The dam creates a great opportunity for a lot of things. Rock thorn Gorge is really different from any other place that we have been. I like that we are getting a change of scenery and that makes this book much more interesting and also the fact that we get some new characters. Some of the other characters cause Noon some grief and make her look at things differently. Really found Noon’s new guardian Angel Fara a bit annoying at times.

This book takes on a lot of different twists and turns. Plus there is something tragic that happens. It really makes you cry at times. We also learn who was trying to hurt the dam and stop it. It was a big twist and one that you never expected. I really feel bad for Noon as there will never be another chance with her and Ari. I literally cried when Ari died. This wasn’t supposed to happen. It was like my heart got ripped out.

What happens next is a surprise as the council decides to give Noon a patronship to the worst slum. So her next journey will be how to govern. This will be an interesting journey and development for her character.
