WHY DID I LISTEN TO BOSS BITCH: A SIMPLE 12-STEP PLAN FOR TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE, YOUR CAREER, AND YOUR BUSINESS BY NICOLE LAPIN?
Boss Bitch by Nicole Lapin is the sort of non-fiction personal development book that appeals to me at my very core. I’ve been in supervisory positions on and off since college. As it happens, many jobs don’t give training on how to be a supervisor. It’s just — oh you’re competent, let’s promote you. So, in order to better develop in my career, I like to seek out information on how to be a better leader. Boss Bitch is my kind of book because it’s aimed at women. There’s profanity. It’s very no nonsense. So, now that I have a free three month trial to Scribd, I decided this would be my first audiobook on there. Also — it helps me to whittle down that Netgalley queue and improve my ratio.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
So, Lapin’s audiobook is basically what the subtitle says. It is about a twelve step plan for you to take charge of your life, your career, and your business. She’s got some really great information about the different types of business licenses. She talks about how if you run your business out of your home, you can deduct some things on taxes. We learn the difference between boss bitches and bad bitches.

AND probably this one thing that appealed to me the most — talking about branding. She talks about how you can’t be all things to all people. The more you try to broaden, the more you dilute your brand and become wishy-washy which doesn’t attract people. Instead, you want to focus on the type of person you’d like to attract to your brand and get sort of specific. I felt like that was useful and something I am going to incorporate into Books & Wine. We’ll see, though.

HOW DID I LIKE BOSS BITCH?
So, there’s a lot that I took away from Boss Bitch. I loved that I actually learned something from this book. However, there were a lot of the twelve steps that didn’t really appeal to me. Or parts where my eyes sort of glazed. Those parts being about incorporating, hiring for your own business. I would suggesting skipping over those sections if you are not about to own your own business. Beyond that, there’s a TON of actionable information.

HOW’S THE NARRATION?
The audiobook is narrated by Lapin herself. She’s a decent narrator. Her voice is a little high, but I think that listening to this at faster than 1x speed accounts for that. Overall, I liked hearing this via audio. It felt like my driving time was filled with me actually learning something. It is a little long, 13 hours. I mean, for a personal development book, that is long. If you want to move up in your career and be a Boss Bitch, you should absolutely give Nicole Lapin’s book a listen.

Wow! I was not expecting this to be such a great read as it was. The information presented is formidable, especially if you're thinking about starting a business. You can tell this is more targeted to a younger audience though by the tone and word usage throughout the book. Nonetheless, I highly recommend.

LOVE this book. It is perfect for my current life - as I am beginning a new career on the side. It gave me even more drive to succeed. Practical and fun, this is a book I would recommend to every boss bitch out there.

I am really struggling with this review because I wanted to love it given my own current focus on starting my small business. And it definitely offers a lot of advice on how to be a boss (of your own company or within someone else’s company). That advice and honest discussion was really what struck me as most useful about this one. I did, however, struggle a bit with the tone and voice of the book. It felt very cheesy in places and it took away a bit from her overall credibility. I wish she’d found a better balance between her wanting to be hip and her wanting to be a mentor. I just didn’t resonate with the tone of the book. I did really find quite a bit of guidance, especially relevant as I’m in the process of starting a business. I did like the suggestions and the stories but I wish there was less of the more cheesy stuff. It would have made more of an impression on me if that was the case. However, it could also be a generational thing … perhaps the ideal audience is someone in their 20s or 30s? I’m in my early 40s and just didn’t find this one to be the best fit for where I am in my life. But, overall, the content is there if you can get past the voice.
