The Empties is the second in a distopian series where the AI Connie, who runs the controlled environment where most humans live, is pitted against those who survive outside in the desert. At the end of the last book, The Glitches, Lib found out about Connie's plans to take "The Norm" and leave earth, taking all the natural resources with her. Now accepted as a part of the Clan, Lib throws herself headlong into defeating Connie, the AI, in the way that seems best to her, re-configuring the technology that comes from the Norm to make weapons and enhancements. Tension grows as some in the Clan oppose Lib's use of technology, blaming the technology for everything that goes wrong. As Lib continues to pursue answers in how to defeat the AI, her relationship with Wolf, the clan's head, is strained and she finds herself wanting to strike out again on her own - to solve the problem and make things right. However, what Lib has forgotten is that they are stronger together...

The Empties presents a unique distopian world with life-like, likable characters. The main character discovers much about herself in this novel and grows as a person... maybe not too much, but a little.
