Michael Jackson’s new book “To Hell and Back” is a philosophical, emotional, in-depth work that delves into the meaning of life, addiction and the human mind.
To Hell and Back is the author's candid redemption memoir that documents his roller coaster journey through the peaks and valleys of undiagnosed bipolar disorder. The story covers Jackson’s successful advancement from a rough childhood in the Philadelphia ghetto to a stint in the Marines, a successful business career, and a happy marriage. All this was cut short by his plunge into the vile and decrepit world of a homeless drug addict, as he sought to self-medicate his mental illness. The book takes place on multiple continents and in many cities, with the unifying theme being the environments where the drug culture and mental illness clash in today’s metropolises, small towns, and rural bus stations. Jackson has known many of these places and has shared cardboard dwellings with their residents.
This was a good read for a memoir read. Littlebit slow in places but I read it. He went through a lot. 3*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.
