An anxious child wonders how his dad will pick him up from daycare if the car breaks down. The dad comes up with one imaginative solution after another, but the child has many questions. This book is sweet and shows just how much the dad loves his child. This would make for very good bonding time with dad.

I like this cute story! The illustrations are great. This book would have been perfect for 5 year old me. I was terrified that I would never be picked up from school so I made my mom sit there - and I would make sure she was still there every five minutes. Matthew has thoughts about what if his dad's car breaks down, how will he come pick him up. Great for the little ones starting school!

A cute little read with beautiful illustrations about a questioning, imaginative kid and his loving father.

Adorable picture book about a father reassuring his child that he will be back to pick him up from kindergarten no matter what obstacles may lay in his path. Both pictures and words make this an engaging read.

Premise: Daddy's little green car has some trouble starting one day, but Matthew and Daddy make it to school alright. Daddy promises to see Matthew later. "But Matthew says, 'What if, this afternoon, the old green car doesn't start?'" This begins a longer "What if...?" conversation where Matthew proposes a problem getting to him and Daddy responds with a solution every time.

My son and I both adored this book and read it almost every night while we had the galley! The illustrations are colorful and fantastic, fitting both realities (such as Daddy having to scrunch up to fit into Matthew's little boat) and fantasies (Matthew's toy bear being giant enough to carry Daddy to the school). The imaginative aspect had my son continuing the story, saying, "Oh, but what if this happens?" and creating fun new ways to tell the story after we finished reading it. Anxiety about being left at school is a very prevalent and relatable topic for young children, and I think addressing it in this way helps kids to discuss it with parents without feeling silly or like they're overreacting. What a wonderful book for a variety of ages!

Daddy’s old green car sometimes has trouble starting. It just barely manages to get Matthew to kindergarten. Before Daddy leaves, Matthew makes sure that Daddy has a backup plan if the car won’t start.

A sweet story about a father’s care for his child. Matthew the little worry wart gets fantastic answers to his “what if” worries about his dad’s possible transportation methods in lieu of a car. From bears to boats to dragon back, but the one that satisfies Matthew the most is the promise that if all else fails Daddy’s long legs will get him there as fast as possible. The illustration style makes the story extra whimsical. I’ll be honest, at first I thought this was a picture book rewrite of Jean Webster’s Daddy-Long-Legs and I wasn’t interested at all thanks to the movie adaptation. But this is a completely different story, so don’t let the title fool you. Recommended for father-child reads, fantasy fans, little worry warts, kids with great imaginations, and fans of whimsical illustrations. I’ll recommend the title to the elementary library at our school to consider purchasing.

Sweet book with a refreshing father as protagonist reassuring his son that he'd overcome any hurdles or problems to pick him up after school. Good for kids with anxiety

I simply loved this little book. Daddies have taken a hard hit in the media the past few decades, presented as incompetent, bumbling idiots or tyrannical dictators. Seldom is a father presented as a warm, caring, sacrificing, strong man that would do anything for his family. Not so here! This father is wildly creative and funny in proving his love and devotion to his son who is anxious about their old car not starting.

This book reminded me of The Runaway Bunny, where the little bunny dreams up ways to get away from his mother but his mother insisted that no matter what, she will find him and care for him. But in this book, the little boy dreams up reasons why the father might not be able to pick him up from school, and the father answers in cunning and creative ways how nothing will hold him back from picking up his son after school. I love the way the father continually and creatively reassures his son of his devotion and protection.

The pictures were clean and simple and yet full of delightful details. I sincerely loved this book and think it belongs in any picture book library.

I gratefully received this book as an eARC from the author, publisher, and NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.

Nadine Brun-Cosme's Daddy Long Legs is a retelling of the well known "Hush Little Baby" lullaby. However, instead of a mother and young child, this tale features a father and son. When the father drops his son off at school, the son is worried about what will happen if his father isn't able to start the car to pick him up. What follows is the "if this doesn't work, then I'll do this!" until the narrative finally reaches reason for the book's title - Daddy will walk all the way to school to get his son back home again.

The illustrations in Brun-Cosme's book are quite nice - crisp and colorful. The narrative, however, is so clearly a reworking of the lullaby and without as much charm. The title and cover illustrations suggest that the core plot would be centered around a father's absurdly long and silly legs, but we don't get to this until the final pages; even then, the title just doesn't quite make sense. This isn't a bad selection, but it's lacking something all the same.

Callie's Kid Review: 4 stars. I think it's really cool but my girl friends might find it boring. My friends that are boys would like it. The reading level was easy peasy for me. I thought the pictures were pretty cool. I liked it when he talked about the dragon.

My Mommy Review: DADDY LONG LEGS by Nadine Brun-Cosme is a great read to offer your children security that a parent will always come for them when they go to school. The story is illustrated well and the graphics will engage a child that cannot read the words by themselves. It reminded me a lot of the Stinky Face books that my children both adored. For those with children always asking "what if", this is a book that will work well on your reading rotation.

I received an ARC of this novel from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I liked the story. It follows the way children think, always questioning things. The artwork didn't do it for me. Stylistically, it was a bit too whimsical.

i loved the message of this book, how his dad will find a way to take care of him. It's sweet and reassuring and will make kids laugh while at the same time, provide the reassurance they need that they won't be left behind. The illustrations aren't my personal favorite (I prefer a more realistic style), but I think kids will enjoy them as well.
