Sometimes you remember books that were touted as great during your childhood, only to read or reread them and discover that they have not "aged well." That is just a polite way of saying that with a greater understanding of marginalized groups, majority individuals can see how horrible genres previously were. Julie of the Wolves falls into this category.

One of my reading challenges is to read the Newbery Medal winners, not the honor ones just the top one.

I found this to be an interesting story of a young Eskimo girl who is lost and alone in the Alaskan wilderness. She recalls memories of her father to navigate and survive in this barren and hostile environment.

Coming in at less than 200 pages it was a relatively quick read but not one of my favorite Newbery books. Though I loved watching the change in Julie as the story progressed.
