It was wonderful to be back in this world with these characters. I've missed Yelena and it was fantastic to be offered this chance to come back to her life and see how the world has changed.

A very solid ending to the long, detailed journey of Yelena and Valek. It did feel repetitive at times, though, which was disappointing.

A fugitive who will not be silenced
It is a dark time for clairvoyants. Scion is in league with the Rephaim, an extraordinarily powerful, otherworldly race that intends to make humans its slaves.
In an unprecedented feat of bravery, Paige Mahoney has succeeded in leading a mass break-out from the brutal camp, Sheol I, where she and other clairvoyants were systematically imprisoned.
Paige is desperate to reach the safety of the London underworld, but the ruthless leader of the Rephaim, Nashira Sargas, is not likely to let her escape so easily...
This new edition contains an exciting preview of the sequel, The Song Rising

I think the hardest thing about my quest to read through my “older than three months” Netgalley queue is reading sequels years after I have read the prior books. I’ll admit that going into Samantha Shannon’s The Mime Order, I literally remembered nothing from The Bone Season. Of course, I wasn’t smart enough to look up what had previously happened. Instead, I was stubborn and kept reading The Mime Order thinking that I would figure it all out with context clues. Lo and behold, that worked for me. However, I would absolutely recommend you read the books in this series together. The series is not even completed yet.

From what I understand, The Mime Order takes place right after the events of The Bone Season – events that I do not remember. Basically a group of voyants are in the process of escaping from the Sheol in the beginning of the book. Then Paige, main character and dreamwalker, is trying to convince the Underlord and Mime Lords and Mime Queens to all meet together to learn about what is happening to voyants and fight back against Scion. No one agrees to her plan. Murder happens and then there’s a power void. Meanwhile, Paige is asked to become the voice and face of the revolution against Scion.

Ultimately, The Mime Order is brutal. There is grit and violence and so much blood. It’s also very compelling, even if you don’t have a single clue about what is happening. I liked that I was eventually able to find my bearing with this book. Not everything is spoonfed, but you still have the ability to figure things out. Paige is such an interesting character and I loved reading about her ability and how she develops her voyant skills. I do think this book is somewhat slower paced than what I am used to. However, it’s still worth checking out.

I do plan to continue with the series – but probably closer to when the fourth book is released. The Mime Order is great for people who already read and enjoyed The Bone Season – who are looking for futuristic urban fantasy about an underclass rising up against their oppressors.

From Unseen Fire is the first novel in the Aven Cycle, a historical fantasy set in an alternate Rome, by debut author Cass Morris
The Dictator is dead; long live the Republic.
But whose Republic will it be? Senators, generals, and elemental mages vie for the power to shape the future of the city of Aven. Latona of the Vitelliae, a mage of Spirit and Fire, has suppressed her phenomenal talents for fear they would draw unwanted attention from unscrupulous men. Now that the Dictator who threatened her family is gone, she may have an opportunity to seize a greater destiny as a protector of the people—if only she can find the courage to try.
Her siblings—a widow who conceals a canny political mind in the guise of a frivolous socialite, a young prophetess learning to navigate a treacherous world, and a military tribune leading a dangerous expedition in the province of Iberia—will be her allies as she builds a place for herself in this new world, against the objections of their father, her husband, and the strictures of Aventan society.
Latona’s path intersects with that of Sempronius Tarren, an ambitious senator harboring a dangerous secret. Sacred law dictates that no mage may hold high office, but Sempronius, a Shadow mage who has kept his abilities a life-long secret, intends to do just that. As rebellion brews in the provinces, Sempronius must outwit the ruthless leader of the opposing Senate faction to claim the political and military power he needs to secure a glorious future for Aven and his own place in history.
As politics draw them together and romance blossoms between them, Latona and Sempronius will use wit, charm, and magic to shape Aven’s fate. But when their foes resort to brutal violence and foul sorcery, will their efforts be enough to save the Republic they love?

I really wanted to like From Unseen Fire by Cass Morris more than I actually did. Based upon the summary, it was full of elements that I typically love. However, maybe this is an indication of shifting reading taste. Or perhaps my lack of enthusiasm is because I was not invested in the audiobook version – which is how I read this book.

From Unseen Fire is the first book of the Aven Cycle. When the book opens, there is this dictator in charge of the Republic and he’s made threats towards Latona (the main woman character) and her family. Anyways, the dictator dies leaving behind a power vacuum and this particularly impacts the city of Aven. By the way, this is basically Rome but with magic. So, there’s a rule that you can’t be in charge if you are a Mage. The main male character, Sempronious is a Mage but hiding it because he wants to be in charge. Sempronius and Latona are attracted to each other — except Latona is already married.

In all honesty, there was a mention of an infant/toddler essentially dying and that is when I checked out of this book. It’s too close to this season of life that I am going through — I just don’t want to read that kind of thing right now. I did end up listening to the full audiobook, but just was not all there while listening. That’s not to say Khristine Hvam lacks talent, she does an admirable job of narration. This was just not the book for me right now. I think maybe in my early 20s, I would have ate this up with a spoon. But at this point, I’ll pass on picking up the sequel.

New York Times bestselling author Maria V. Snyder transports readers back to the realms of Sitia and Ixia in an exciting new Study novel full of magic, danger and intrigue.
Ever since being kidnapped from the Illiais Jungle as a child, Yelena Zaltana's life has been fraught with peril. But the recent loss of her Soulfinding abilities has endangered her more than ever before. As she desperately searches for a way to reclaim her magic, her enemies are closing in, and neither Ixia nor Sitia is safe for her anymore. Especially since the growing discord between the two countries and the possibility of a war threatens everything Yelena holds dear.
Valek is determined to protect Yelena, but he's quickly running out of options. The Commander suspects that his loyalties are divided, and he's been keeping secrets from Valek...secrets that put him, Yelena and all their friends in terrible danger. As they uncover the various layers of the Commander's mysterious plans, they realize it's far more sinister than they could have ever imagined.

Night Study by Maria V. Snyder is the penultimate book in the Study series and it lays the groundwork for the last book. Overall, I thought this was a decent read. I liked being back in the familiar world of Ixia and Sitia. In this book tension truly is building. We have one nation that embraces magic and one that does not. Plus, Yelena’s current loss of her magic ability. It all adds up to create a story that will have you wanting the final book in the series.

I feel like none of the fantasy books I read have a pregnant woman for lead character, so kudos to Snyder for taking that on. I am at the time in my life where I don’t mind that in a story and can somewhat relate. If you can’t well, there are other viewpoints to from – Valek, Leif, and Janco. Yelena is the only woman who gets a POV though. The story moves along at an enjoyable pace though.

I will say that this book is absolutely all lead up for the last book and that’s fine. Onora is a newer character that I liked getting to know better – as she is vying for Valek’s job. Plus, we get more Ari and Janco who are the true treats of the story. Also, I found myself very invested in Yelena’s pregnancy — FYI she does not have the baby in this book. I’d recommend this if you’re already four books into the Study series – might has well go all the way and finish.

New York Times bestselling author Maria V. Snyder brings her Poison Study series to its exhilarating conclusion
Despite the odds, Yelena and Valek have forged an irrevocable bond—and a family—that transcends borders. Now, when their two homelands stand on the brink of war, they must fight with magic and cunning to thwart an Ixian plot to invade Sitia.
Yelena seeks to break the hold of the insidious Theobroma that destroys a person's resistance to magical persuasion. But the Cartel is determined to keep influential citizens and Sitian diplomats in thrall—and Yelena at bay. With every bounty hunter after her, Yelena is forced to make a dangerous deal.
With might and magic, Valek peels back the layers of betrayal surrounding the Commander. At its rotten core lies a powerful magician…and his latest discovery. The fate of all rests upon two unlikely weapons. One may turn the tide. The other could spell the end of everything.

I finally made it to the end! Not the end of my Netgalley queue, alas, but the end of Maria V. Snyder’s Study series. And what a journey it has been. Dawn Study closes out the series about Yelena, Valek, and their friends. I think that this book has left fans divided and that is okay. Personally, I enjoyed seeing the outcome of the series and getting it all wrapped up. I can understand why not everyone loves this book.

Basically Dawn Study picks up right where Night Study leaves off. The characters are in a tight spot. Ixia’s Commander Ambrose is under the influence of a magician – Own. Sitia’s magicians have been brainwashed by Theobroma and are now part of the Cartel. It’s up to Valek, Yelena, and all their friends to save both nations. The characters get into trouble a couple times and make daring escapes. We learn more about Valek’s family. Yelena finally has her baby.

On the whole, I am glad to have read this series. I do wish I had read them all closer together. But I also like feeling that as I have grown, so too has this series. I am not sure how much I’d have liked the last two books had I not also experienced pregnancy. I think that added in an extra layer of understanding on my end. Definitely would recommend these books to anyone who wants to read a romantic fantasy with a superb cast of characters and interesting developments over six books. Also, recommend if you want a sweeping series that isn’t quite as big of a time investment as other fantasy series.

It feels like it's been a long ride but the Chronicles of Ixia is ending. The Soulfinders series is ending. The Poison Study series is ending. Dawn Study brings together the final endings for three different story arcs so it's a bit of a bittersweet ending.

The very first book really struck me as one of the first borderline New Adult titles I'd read at the time and I remember really connecting with the characters. That never changed over the course of the series. This was definitely one of those books where the characters crossed firmly out of YA range into NA/adult.

Being the final book, there's a lot going on in Dawn Study so I didn't want to put it down, but it was also tough because these books aren't action packed, with scene after scene of high tension and a quick-paced plot. So despite needing to know what happened next, the book's pace made for slower reading. There were also points that moved too quickly so, really, it was a bit all over the place. And when it comes down to it, I just didn't love this one as much as the others.

That said, I love the characters and they truly drive these books from start to finish. The story is intriguing and even when I didn't fall head-over-heels for one of the series installments, I still enjoyed it. Definitely a series I recommend (all 3 of them, though I recommend reading in order) and I look forward to future works from Maria V. Snyder.

I figured this would end well since it's the last book of the series, and it did.

I will admit to skipping the middle part, mainly because I couldn't remember a lot of the characters. It had just been too long since I'd read the rest of the series.

I have been such a fan of the Study books, Maria V. Snyder was one of the first YA authors I stumbled onto and she kind of paved a way for my interests in this genre. I’ve loved Yelena and Valek for so long, so I was quite pleased to find that Dawn Study was published. It slipped under my radar and frankly, kept getting pushed aside for months.

It was clear to me early on that I didn’t read the last book in this series, Night Study. Another one that slipped under my radar apparently. So it took a little bit to catch up on what happened, but I didn’t feel like I couldn’t follow the story, Snyder did a great job of refreshing the important details.

The magic that I loved about this series was still very much present, but at this point – 6 books in – the formula was all too familiar. Our favourite characters weaved themselves in and out of trouble, making a mess of things before fixing it all and saving their world. It`s an easy book to read and to enjoy, but I fear it`s becoming a bit tiresome for me, and thus, my enjoyment of this series wasn’t what it once was.

Yelena was still as fierce and independent as ever, but Valek, though always protective of her, was starting to drive me crazy with how overprotective he was in this case. Yelena couldn’t breathe without him scouting out the area first to make sure there was no toxic air around. He used to be so valiant and their relationship was so passionate and strong, but I was rather tired of their dynamic in this book and it just didn’t make me swoon as it once did.

I love Snyder’s work and she writes beautifully, but I found the story dragged and got caught up in all the middle parts, the preparing for battles or trying to rescue people and nothing seemed to get accomplished. Or as soon as something was accomplished, something else happened that led our characters back to square one again. I got tired of running in circles.

The gist of it I guess is that this book made me tired. It was a nice finish to the story and tied everything up nicely, but I feel like this was a couple books too long for the series.

So so so good!! I love the Study series and this just keeps it going!

Every time Maria V. Snyder writes a new book, I have to read it immediately! Just when I thought she couldn't get any better, "Dawn Study" blew that theory out of the water! A must-read for fans of her previous work!

Dawn Study is the third book in the Soulfinders series by Maria V. Snyder. It could also be considered the sixth book in the Study series, or the ninth book in the larger Chronicles of Ixia series. You can read each sub series on its own, but I highly recommend reading them all to get the bigger picture.

Despite the odds, Yelena and Valek have forged an irrevocable bond and a family that transcends borders. Now, when their two homelands stand on the brink of war, they must fight with magic and cunning to thwart an Ixian plot to invade Sitia. Yelena seeks to break the hold of the insidious Theobroma that destroys a person's resistance to magical persuasion. But the Cartel is determined to keep influential citizens and Sitian diplomats in thrall and Yelena at bay. With every bounty hunter after her, Yelena is forced to make a dangerous deal. With might and magic, Valek peels back the layers of betrayal surrounding the Commander. At its rotten core lies a powerful magician and his latest discovery. The fate of all rests upon two unlikely weapons. One may turn the tide. The other could spell the end of everything.

Dawn Study picks up right where Night Study left off. Yelena and Valek have to deal with the dangers of the political intrigue that has been such a big part of their lives, along with the changes in their magical abilities. They are both also struggling with their need to keep each other, and everyone else safe- while trusting those in their confidence to do what they do best. The book is as much about overcoming the odds and power hunger people as it is about the emotional growth they make. I love the way Snyder keeps everything so well balanced between the physical and emotional danger each character faces. As always, Yelena and Valek and their herd are some of my favorite characters- but I still love seeing those from the Glass and Story storylines all come together in the larger story line.

Dawn Study is another book that sat in my to read pile much longer than intended. It took me a bit to feel like I remember all that I had read previously, but once I was past the first chapter I was completely lost in the story again, and loving the continued adventures of Valek and Yelena. I did not find it as perfect as some of the Ixia books, but it will still be a must read for fans, and is still a good read. Also, I loved those other books so much that they were a tough act to follow.

Dawn Study is a fantastic end to Snyder's Soulfinders series.

This was a great wrap up for this series. I’m curious to see if they will be making appearances in later books or if we’ll see side characters get their own series. I truly love Snyder’s writing, there are few that can do Fantasy quite like she can. I’ve been in love with this series since the beginning (that’s Poison Study), and I’ve devoured any book she’s written since then and this book does live up to most of the expectations.

I’ve said throughout this series the books feel forced. While I am enjoying reading about these characters again, there’s just something that feels stiff. So keep that in mind when you read further into my review. This story had all the twists and turns in the plot that you would expect from an author like Snyder. Yelena continues to be capable, and even regains some of her confidence by remembering that she didn’t always have magic. Valek continues to be over-protective, and is clearly getting older. This is one area that I have to applaud Snyder, so many authors forget that their characters have to age, but Yelena and Valek are not like that. They have grown up and gotten older, and with that has come slower reflexes and a desire to settle down to the quiet life. I very much appreciate that aspect of the story.

I also loved Onora, I think I might be able to spend an entire paragraph just on why I love this girl. She is just so kick ass, but manages to keep her humanity too. For all that she has suffered, she doesn’t kill unless absolutely necessary and that makes her more real to me. She also loves Yelena, and anyone who disputes that can come fight me! It’s a quiet kind that is all about friendship and how open Yelena has been with her about her own tragedies. It allows Onora to realize safely that she is not the only one who has been traumatized and survived.

What I didn’t love was how open-ended it was, some may disagree with me but the fact that one key character escapes leads me to believe that we’ll be seeing these characters again. This won’t disappoint me if it ends up being one of the side characters, but if we end up back with Yelena and Valek I will be. Their time is over, and I’m ready to begin reading about Teegan or Reema. That being said, this was a great conclusion. Valek and Yelena got their happy ever after, and both of them learned how to be at peace with themselves and the world. I would give the book 4 out of 5 stars.

I have been a big fan of this series since it’s debut with Poison Study, and have read all 9 books since. I am deeply in love with each character and I’m super sad this is the last installment. I must confess, and I’m really hoping there will be another spin off series, maybe taking place in a few years when the younger characters are growing up? Owning their powers? Valek’s siblings, or Reema and Teegan? Ok ok, I am babbling! Let me get this review started!

In this episode, Yelena is pregnant and still magic-less and she is working really hard with her merry gang to put down Owen, his control over the commander, the Cartel and all of theirs enemies before they manage to rob every magician in Sitia of their powers, or worst. All our favorite characters are involved and they are in great danger, facing so many unknown factors and poisons they don’t know how to counter. They have to play smart and we can only hope they all survive this dire situation. The whole endeavor is action packed from cover to cover and will leave you breathless!

Snyder knitted her plot seamlessly and every twist and turn kept me in high alert. When you think there’s no way out of a situation, our favorite characters bounce back and when you think things are finally starting to get together, something else comes up and messes everything. It’s highly frustrating, but oh so addictive. I was glued to kindle and devoured every page.

I was satisfied with the ending and with how Snyder tied every thread for this final novel. I must say I wish the epilogue was longer. I am not ready to let go *cries* which is why I am praying for a spin-off series. I love these characters so much and I hope we get to see Yelena and Valek a couple of years from now. Hopefully living their happily ever after.

If you haven’t read this series yet, I urge you to do so! The first installment is Poison Study and you can find the perfect reading order on Maria’s website.

I love this series so much, its one of my absolute favorites and I can't believe its all over now and I have to say goodbye to Valek and Yelena and the group. I can't recommend picking this book up enough, it was a fantastic ending to a wonderful series.

It's been a couple years since I had read the previous book in this series yet within the first two pages, I was comfortably back in the world created by Ms. Snyder. A good deal of my comfort was due to the the wonderful characters that populate it.

Yelena and Valek have come far to develop a strong relationship that allows them each to shine and that takes work. They both have had to learn to control their over-protectiveness which would get in the way of stopping the Cartel. Ari and Janco remind me of brothers, deadly brothers. And there is Onora has really come into her own.

DAWN STUDY is a book that will stand on its own but to truly experience the richness of the world and the characters, I do recommend reading the entire series. If you enjoy fantasy with complex characters and a wonderfully developed world, then I highly recommend this book and series.

It was really hard for me to rate this book!!! I LOVE the poison study series but I really struggled to finish this book and to be honest skimmed some parts of it. Maria writes amazing story lines when her characters are together ...but she has them off on all these different tasks and separate for more than 60% of the book. They will all be together for 10 pages and then they are off for 80 pages and its all about missing the others and worrying about how things are going. It gets old after the the 30th page and even older because this is the 6th book in the series. Don't get me wrong the story is great and ending to this book is a wonderful conclusion for Valek and Yelena... you just have to get through all the dragged out plot.

As if Snyder could be expected to deliver anything less than stellar! Falling in line as everyone of her other books do, this was beyond riveting and truly a magical work of fiction!

Another fabulous read by Snyder. I have been reading this series since I happened across the first one. Each book in the series continues to amaze me. The story is written in multiple character perspectives which allows you to understand more of what is going on. This gives you a deeper understanding of the characters and story. There were no unanswered questions. This was a captivating read that concluded the series marvelously.

This is a wonderful continuation and conclusion to a great series! My rating 4.75.

Pregnant Yelena and Valek are struggling to find allies to help fight the Cartel headed by Bane. The Cartel have drugged the masses of magicians and Sitians, even the Sitian army, so they believe Bane’s lies that the Commander from Ixia is planning to attack. As if that isn’t enough to worry about, Yelena needs to stay hidden as the Mosquito and other assassins have been sent to kill her. Valek sneaks out to try to remove the Mosquito only to face his own assassination attack from Onora, who has taken Valek's place as the Commander's top assassin.

Yelena and Valek have relied on help and sanctuary from Fisk and his ‘guild’ of street informers. But Fisk and his young people become targets for the enemy too. Meanwhile, Yelena’s brother Leif, his wife Mara, and Yelena’s and Leif’s father, Esau, are sure that there is a specialty plant that Bane is planning to use to further his plans for control. Before they can get to the city they are surrounded and Leif is the only one to escape.

Ari and Janco have been off on a separate mission and they have uncovered news that will be helpful if they can get it safely to Yelena and Valek. They are all too ready to jump back into the thick of things even as the allies face one dangerous situation after another. It seems almost everyone is going to risk a turn at capture and several clever rescues are required before the group can put the big rescue plan in action.

It was a joy to have all the characters, including Valek’s siblings, share in the grand scheme to save Sitia. I loved having Kiki and the other horses as active characters even if Yelena couldn’t talk to Kiki because the baby was blocking her magic. The interaction and banter among the friends – an extended family – is delightful. I liked that the love and chemistry between Yelena and Valek is clearly shared without the need for graphic scenes. I was very much impressed with how well all the details were carried forward from the earlier books and wrapped up nicely.

This has been a wonderful series and, although I was pleased with the skill of this final installment, I am sorry to see the series close. It almost makes me want to go back to the beginning and start again!

I fell in love with Yelena and Valek in Poison Study and have been a devoted fan of this series ever since then. Maria V. Snyder has created such a wonderful world along with so many favourite characters and I just devour each new instalment so I'm pretty heartbroken that Dawn Study is the final book. If you're going to end a series then it has to be on a high note though and she has definitely achieved that goal here. This book was action packed from beginning to end, we get a chance to catch up with all our favourite characters (old and new) and I don't think there could have been a more fitting end to the series.

This is the conclusion we've been building up to, the final showdown between Yelena and her herd and their longstanding enemies, and it was well worth the wait. Owen Moon thinks he has everything planned down to the tiniest detail, he has the Commander brainwashed, the Master Magicians and the Sitian Council are under his control and he is about to start a war between Ixia and Sitia to destroy the magicians once and for all. Unfortunately for him Yelena, Valek and their allies are determined to stop him at any cost. They're short on manpower, they're up against weapons they have no idea how to counter and they are still trying to figure out all of Owen's backup plans but they're fighting for their lives and they're aiming to win no matter what it costs them.

I'm not going to say anymore about the plot but just when you think you have everything figured out Maria V Snyder throws another curveball to change the game completely. Our team are hit with one thing after another and the danger has never been greater so it's genuinely an edge of the seat read that leaves you praying everyone you love will make it to the end. If I have one complaint it's that I'd have liked a longer epilogue but that's only because I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters and I wanted to spend more time with everyone, not because the book actually needed any more. I can't help it, I'm greedy when it comes to this world! In reality I actually think the author was right to end Yelena and Valek's story here, it's about time they found some peace and are able to focus on themselves and their growing family.

That doesn't mean I'm not hoping for more in the future though, I'd be happy to read extra stories about ANY of the characters in this world but what I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for is a spin off set a few years down the line starring some of the younger characters. I'd love to see more of Reema and Teegan as they grow into their powers and just imagine how much they could achieve if you had them working alongside Fisk and his helping hands or Valek's younger siblings. Onora would be another interesting character to follow and I'd be happy to spend more time with Ari and Janco too. There are so many options for expanding this world and of course if we could get a glimpse into Yelena and Valek's future too that would just make things even sweeter.

This is without a doubt one of my favourite series and it's one I can't recommend highly enough. It has been excellent from beginning to end and Maria V Snyder continues to be an auto-buy author for me so no matter what she decides to write next I'll definitely be reading it.
